About the Job

Objective/Overview:
This position is located in the U of M Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC) Dental Clinic. The employee will provide quality patient care through partial and complete prophylactic dental treatment, work with the dentists and dental therapists in seeing emergency patients, and assist in care coordination as necessary (billing/referrals). The registered dental hygienist will also participate on various quality initiatives and other committees as assigned.

Essential Functions:
-Provide partial and complete prophylactic dental treatment and care to patients (85%):
-Dental prophylaxis for adults and children
-Root-planing and scaling procedures as indicated
-Gross debridement procedures as indicated
-Fluoride treatment
-Patient education for oral hygiene
-Nutritional counseling
-Take digital radiographs
-Periodontal probing
-Take impressions
-Place sealants
-Administer local anesthetic
-Administer nitrous oxide and monitor patients that are induced under nitrous oxide (only when certified)
-Assist dentists and dental therapists in limited oral evaluations as indicated
-Chart and write in progress notes using the S-O-A-P format
-Take blood pressure as needed
-Use of an intra-oral camera
-Review patients' health history

Sterilize instruments/equipment and maintain a standard of infection control. (5%)
-While in sterilization lab you should wear gloves and safety glasses
-Meet all sterilization and documentation criteria set by OSHA and CDC, ADA
-Make sure all instruments and equipment go through proper sterilization and re-circulation
-Disinfect the dental treatment room according to CUHCC protocol
-Work on completion of daily/weekly/monthly testing.

Dental reception/scheduling/care coordination (5%)
-Advise front desk on scheduled appointments
-Greet patients
-Answer phones/telephone techniques
-Confirm all appointments two days ahead
-Make sure we have labels or patient identification on all records/documents
-Fax referrals as needed
-Scanning
-Fill out paperwork for hygiene procedures requiring prior authorization
-Refer patients to internal service lines as needed
-Refer patients to CUHCC's Billing and Patient Services departments as needed (for questions about waivers, cost and discounts)

Participation on staff development, quality assurance, compliance, etc. (5%)
-Other duties as assigned

Hourly Salary Range: $33.64 - $44.38

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:
-Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program, including registration as a Dental Hygienist in Minnesota.
-Current in CPR.
-Proficiency in working with computerized medical and dental records, Microsoft Word, and other software
-High-level communications skills to work with patients, staff, providers, and outside agencies
-Excellent customer service skills
-Demonstrated ability to work with patients and staff from diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds
-Capacity to work on a team and make positive contributions to the team

Preferred Qualifications:
-Fluency in one of CUHCC's predominant patient languages (Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Lao, Hmong)
-Experience working in a community clinic
-Nitrous oxide certification.
-Restorative Functions (RF) certification.

**A negative TB test is required for this position.
