New Zealand Business Engagement Manager ,Market Development Facility (MDF)- New Zealand

Project Overview and Role:

Market Development Facility is an
Australian Government funded multi-country initiative which promotes
sustainable economic development, through higher incomes for women and men, in
our partner countries.

We connect individuals,
businesses, governments, and NGOs with each other, and with markets at home and
abroad. This enhances investment and coordination and allows partnerships to
flourish, strengthening inclusive economic growth. MDF is funded by the
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(MFAT). It is implemented by Palladium in partnership with Swisscontact.

A core element of MDF's work is connecting the Australian and New
Zealand business communities with businesses in the Indo-Pacific regions while
also supporting the operations of MDF's regional investment component.

We are looking for a business engagement extraordinaire to join our A/NZ
Business Engagement Unit tasked with liaising with New Zealand businesses who
invest in the Pacific region.
This role will work collaboratively with an equivalent Business
Engagement Manager in Australia to achieve objectives for the broader business
unit. The position will also support the program's broader set of activities
including strategy, analytical work and reporting.

  • thorough understanding of the New Zealand business community, in particular those businesses with an interest in the Indo-Pacific region

  • ability to self-motivate and drive an independent work plan
  • persuasive communication and negotiation skills

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The
primary responsibility of this position is to lead engagement between MDF's
country offices and the New Zealand business community. The position will also
support MDF's overall engagement across countries, consisting of a range of tasks
to support of the program's overall objectives by:
Key tasks include:

  • Meeting with a wide variety of public and private stakeholders to
    understand the linkages between New Zealand and industries and businesses in
    the region.
  • Liaising with diaspora groups of relevant countries to identify
    innovative business models and investment opportunities.
  • Contributing to a variety of economic and socioeconomic analysis,
    including business environment, roles of market actors, poverty, gender,
    industry competitiveness, etc.
  • In support of country programs, promoting the creation of a portfolio of
    innovative interventions in line with existing strategies and the MSD approach.
    This will include working with a wide mix of organisations to plan market
    system changes and devise new business models, negotiating with prospective
    partners, and drafting accompanying documentation.
  • Overseeing the technical quality of interventions, monitoring progress, making adjusting based on lessons, identifying opportunities to scale interventions.

Required Qualifications:

We are looking for
candidates with a diverse range of skills, which include:

  1. Demonstrated experience of engaging with the private sector either in New Zealand and/or in the Indo-Pacific region (ideally both).
  2. Proven interpersonal skills with both colleagues and external stakeholders, including in cross-cultural settings.
  3. An entrepreneurial and practical attitude, and a strong interest in working with the private sector and innovative business models.
  4. Proven success in program/project management, including contracting.
  5. Highly analytical mindset, with a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as economics, business, international development, agriculture or equivalent work experience.
  6. Excellent written and spoken English language skills, including report-writing.
  7. Knowledge of, and experience with, the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach, or related approaches to economic development. (Desirable)
