We are also the proud home of Nightingale, the first hospital-based air ambulance in Virginia. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital includes Sentara Heart Hospital, the area's first and only dedicated heart hospital. Within our variety of high-acuity, highly specialized units, we have nine ICUs (including burns, neuro, vascular, cardiac, general medicine and progressive ventilation).As a Respiratory Therapist at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, you will learn a multitude of advanced practices such as the use of esophageal balloon-guided ventilation, advanced ventilator strategies including lung protective ventilation and monitoring of indices that have been proven to reduce ventilator induce lung injury (VILI). Our respiratory-driven protocols afford our therapists the ability to use all of the tools in their tool belts (use of APRV, Volumetric Diffusive Respiration etc.). Our department's proactive approach is applauded and encourage by our physicians, nurses and other colleagues. But don't take our word for it - listen to what they have to say here. We train our therapists not only to be able to perform a task, but the science and reason behind it. Required Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree required. Non degreed applicants with RRT credentials prior to January 1, 2006 and graduates from a military RT program with RRT credentials will also be considered.
  • State license, active NBRC RRT and BLS required at time of hire. For new graduates only, must have State license and BLS at time of hire, and must obtain NBRC RRT within 6 months of hire date.

Job Summary

The Registered Respiratory Therapist builds upon the overall pulmonary management in identifying and implementing physician directed respiratory care interventions for an individual or a group of patients. Works cooperatively with nursing and other health care team members for professional respiratory care practice for all patients ranging in ages from neonates to adults in all clinical and ambulatory settings. Responsible for the appropriate age specific assessment and treatment of patients. May have access to, or oversight of Protected Health Information (PHI) in the course of carrying out position duties.

Associates or Bachelor's degree required. 7900SE - Driver's License. Active RRT from NBRC and hold State licensure required. Non degreed applicants with RRT credentials prior to January 1, 2006 will also be considered. Graduates from a military RT program with RRT credentials will also be considered.
