About This Role:



The KSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center (DTRC) exists to support the dairy teaching, research and extension missions of the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry. The Farm Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the personnel, animals and unit facilities and equipment in a manner that properly supports the teaching, research, and extension missions.

Incumbent functions as the manager of the Dairy Teaching and Research Center and is responsible for ensuring the safety of the cows and other dairy unit employees. Incumbent is responsible for 260 mature cows, 260 replacement animals, 8 full-time employees and 15-20 undergraduate student employee. Incumbent is responsible for purchasing feed and supplies for the unit.

Supervises and trains personnel, maintains records, performs artificial insemination, performs herd health care, assists in decision-making process regarding selection of cull cows, semen purchases, and location of cows at the unit. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for making decisions concerning the veterinary care of animals on a daily basis based on approved protocols and procedures. Incumbent works with herd veterinarians and faculty to established treatment and management protocols for the dairy.

Incumbent is responsible for maintaining and organizing repairs and facility changes at the unit. Incumbent will work with the faculty supervisor and other dairy faculty to establish goals for facility changes and assist with planning projects. Incumbent is responsible for the general appearance of the facility. In addition, the manager is responsible for equipment maintenance records for the unit.

Assists faculty with teaching, research, extension and public service programs including safety and IACUC inspections. Incumbent is responsible for maintaining all records of research and animal treatment. Records are to be updated daily and data entered into both paper and electronic systems.

Incumbent is responsible to receive emergence call at all times when not on vacation or on official travel.

Incumbent is responsible for working with the assistant manager to cover supervisory duties on weekends and holidays.

Incumbent is responsible for additional tasks and duties as assigned by the faculty supervisor.

What You'll Need to Succeed:



Minimum Qualifications:



  • B.S. Degree in Animal Sciences or closely related field
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • May use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Demonstrated ability to manage dairy cattle
  • Experience supervising of full time employees
  • Demonstrated interest and desire to work in a research and teaching environment.
  • Ability and interest to train students and other full time, part time, graduate students employees
  • Ability to maintain facilities and equipment with particular attention to appearance and expense.


Other Requirements:



  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Artificial breeding certification or experience
  • Ability to operate tractors, skid loaders, and feeding equipment
