This position will be hired at the Research Administrator 2 or Research Administrator 3 level depending on the experience of the selected candidate.

DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 52 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Under the general supervision, this position is responsible for providing comprehensive financial analysis and pre-award grant submission support for multiple faculty submitting applications through the Moores Cancer Center. This position will directly interface with faculty across UCSD to ensure success with the research mission of the Cancer Center.

This position will involve learning multiple UCSD systems and best practices, all while focusing on preparing and submitting research grant applications.

While the focus of this position is to sustain the success of the department's pre-award mission, there can be additional responsibilities assigned on the post-award financial area of research administration to ensure that the incumbent is familiar with all parts of the research administration process. This can include partnering with central offices, working with faculty on assigning allowable costs, and also ensuring that financial reports are accurately and compliant with sponsor terms and conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines. Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret complex general policy guidelines, making independent decisions and initiating action.

  • Knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.

  • Ability to manage a high volume of transactions. Ability to thrive in a busy, high-volume, and deadline driven work environment that requires coordination of multiple activities and the judgment and flexibility to reprioritize to accommodate various requests.

  • Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting. Demonstrated and/or ability to quickly comprehend GAAP, and financial planning and analysis.

  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.

  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization; communication skills; and a customer service focus.

  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.

  • Ability to analyze and prepare budgets, to identify spending patterns and project future expenditures. Skill in projecting salary, benefit and indirect costs, with knowledge of payroll and personnel regulations impacting such costs.

  • Working knowledge of accounting principles, business math and bookkeeping for budget planning and cost analysis. Experience with reconciling discrepancies and audit procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures relating to contract and grants, and accounting.
  • Experience in contract and grant proposal formats, preparation, submission and administration, as well as federal, state and private granting agency regulations.
  • Experience with Oracle, Kuali and/or UCPath.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).

If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
