Job Description SCOPE OF POSITION This position is responsible for providing outreach athletic training and duties as assigned. OSU Sports Medicine is a multi-disciplinary outpatient program that provides health care for athletes and physically active people of all abilities. OSU Sports Medicine services include physician services, physical therapy, athletic training, education and research programs and community outreach programs.
POSITION SUMMARY Primary responsibilities include outreach activities consisting of event and practice coverage, preventative practice, athletic training room coverage, educational involvement and other duties related to coverage for college, high school, recreational or club sports. This position may be responsible for provision of components of physical therapy treatment plans while working under the direct supervision of the treating physical therapist. This position may also serve as a physician extender in the physician clinics, coordinating patient flow and supporting the physicians as directed to ensure timely delivery of quality care. This position may supervise supportive clinical personnel (i.e.: aides, students), participate in a teaching capacity, and assist with administrative procedures. The Athletic Trainer will work within their scope of practice as outlined by the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Athletic Trainers Board of the State of Ohio. The position will be compliant with medical center, sports medicine, and outreach policies and guidelines.
Minimum Education Required Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications Completion of an approved education program in athletic training and/or related health science field, State of Ohio Athletic Trainer license and NATA certification required. Two to three years experience in an out-patient orthopedic/sports medicine facility preferred. Previous experience working with athletic populations required. Proficient in computer skills, including the use of Microsoft office, word, excel and power point. Duties and Responsibilities
- Administers treatment as prescribed in all phases of therapeutic exercises including passive, active, active assistive, resistive, stretching, orthopedic manual therapy, facilitative, inhibitive and relaxation techniques.
- Proficient in the use of all modality equipment in the physical therapy department as listed on the Competency Check List.
- Administer wound care including sterile dressing technique and agent selection while utilizing universal precautions as indicated.
- Provides muscle re-education and facilitation of exercises, gait training including instructions in use of assistive devices.
- Athletic trainer will be proficient in the use of bracing, taping and strapping techniques for prevention and rehabilitation of various injuries.
- Measures, orders and fit patients with various types of supports and/or braces and provides instruction for home care activities.
- Instruct patients on posture and body mechanics.
- Provide a variety of prescribed manual techniques using knowledge of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems and the patients medical condition to meet athlete and patient goals.
- Discuss home care preparations and programs with the athlete/patient and/or family while distributing written instructions. Also instruct other health care team personnel who may be involved with the athlete/patient.
- Provide for field and event coverage for local college, high school, and other facility associated athletic events within the scope of the Athletic Training Guidelines.
- Perform selected treatment procedures delegated to him or her by the physical therapists that are commensurate with his or her education and training, if treating patients/athletes under a physical therapy plan of care.
- Perform work tasks related to routine operation of the Sports Medicine Service.
- Assist in the education and clinical experience of student athletic trainers on an as needed basis.
Clinical Practice RPAC Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Clinic Consists of providing support to physical therapy plan of cares, including observations, treatment procedures, training, interventions, educational sessions, and counseling conducted as part of a team approach or as a single practitioner. The documentation of patient care and planned progression are integral components of clinical practice.
- Treatment sessions may be conducted in individual sessions with one or more practitioners (i.e. co-treatment), in groups of patients with similar or diverse skill levels, or within groupings of patients who focus on individual goals but participate in care within general treatment areas, other locations within the medical center or in the community.
- Professionals use a wide variety of approaches for treatment, consistent with the individual needs of the persons served. Approaches include: salient factors those key issues that must be addressed to achieve the established discharge plan; use of clinical pathways, algorithms, and clinical guidelines; use of specific protocols to address component functions or skills established within the Rehabilitation Plan of Care (as applicable to venue of care).
- Documentation requirements and format are performed according to policies and procedures established within the Ambulatory Rehabilitation Department and follow the Standards of Practice Guidelines established by professional governing bodies (NATA, APTA, etc).
- Productivity expectations are established in support of the departments budgeted fiscal responsibility and are defined in the departments policy and procedure manual.
- Deliver care in accordance with the standards of practice for the Medical Center and for Rehabilitation and patients rights, including safety and infection control standards.

Site Specific Responsibilities
- Provide rehabilitation clinic support amp; fulfill contractual needs for The Ohio State University Competitive and Recreational Sport Clubs, including:
- Medical coverage of home events for high risk sport programs and large scale home events (tournaments with >3 teams)
- Provide concussion education and assist with baseline ImPACT testing for all athletes competing in high risk sports
- Assist with referral navigation
Documentation
- Completes all evaluation documentation in a thorough and timely fashion for outpatient and on site coverage patients
- This includes completion of all electronic medical record trainings, competencies and maintaining good standing with quality assurance standards for documentation
- Completes progress notes on all patients with appropriate frequency.
- The athletic trainer maintains regular communication with physician regarding patient/athlete progress
- The athletic trainer provides documentation of on-site coverage activities as appropriate including but not limited to documentation of routine care activities provided.
- Completes all evaluation paperwork relative to students during clinical education activity.
- Completes assigned paperwork for QA, productivity and outcome data as indicated.
Administrative Duties
- Provides input to department policies and procedures, staff development, quality assurance, budget preparation, and operating problems.
- Assist with scheduling patients for daily treatments, rehabilitation appointments, physician follow-ups, including assisting with rescheduling/changing of appointments and notifies the staff involved
- Performs routine daily clean up of clinic as needed (i.e. wipe down treatment tables).
- Performs routine clinic tasks as needed (i.e. stocking and distributing linen).
- Photocopies chart components and home exercise instruction sheets as needed.
- Answers incoming sports medicine related calls and questions.
- Maintain good working relationships between the physical therapy staff, physicians, other departments, emergency medical services and community organizations.
General Duties
- Answers phones, directs calls as needed.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Attends clinical in-services.
- Obtains proper release forms as needed (i.e. medical information or photography).
- Participates in clinical product review as requested by the Athletic Trainer or physicians.

Masters degree in Athletic Training or equivalent preferred. Experience in an outpatient orthopedic/sports medicine facility with rehabilitation experience, preferred. Previous experience working with athletic populations required.

This position will require staying current with technical rehabilitation advances and skills. Maintaining licensure requirements. - Frequently needs to exert a force of 10 25 pounds for the purpose of lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing objects.

- Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from your eyes.
Mental Requirements A high degree of mental application is required with all aspects of this job for day-to-day job duties, including conflict management, excellent interpersonal skills, and relationship management. Work Environment The work involves risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring (i.e. working around moving parts, carts, machines) working with sharps (i.e. needles, syringes) working with chemicals (i.e. cleaning agents). Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as gloves.
