Post-Doctoral Associate

Primary duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, studies of arenaviruses and influenza viruses and vaccine developments.

90% Research: Planning and performance of complex daily and weekly experiments. The candidate must have the ability to solve problems with experiments and equipment independently and have the desire and ability to provide ongoing intellectual contributions to research program such as exploring new possible approaches to problems or suggesting new interpretation of data. This position requires the candidate to have the ability and assume the responsibility to correctly prepare and execute experiments independently. Proper review and adaptation of scientific literature as directed by the investigator will be required to develop complex scientific procedures and to remain current with continual advances in scientific knowledge. The candidate must have the ability to draft manuscripts and assist with grant writing. Duties may include: culturing and maintaining bacterial stocks and eukaryotic cells; preparation of solutions; preparation of plasmid DNA from bacterial cultures; DNA and RNA preparation; preparation of recombinant viruses; cell transduction; western blots; quantitative RT-PCR; animal (mice and guinea pigs) handling; working with tissues from animals and humans; immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, confocal and light microscopy, and flow cytometry. Duties will also include summarizing, analyzing and interpreting data, drafting manuscripts, assisting with grant writing, statistical analysis, organizing and tabulating data into presentable formats, maintaining a scientific notebook, and presenting results at lab meetings.

10% General laboratory operation and maintenance and supervising others. Ordering supplies, record keeping, equipment maintenance, computer based data entry and analysis, supervision of other lab staff, student workers, and student researchers, and misc duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
PhD and/or other similar doctoral degree in biological/biomedical sciences and/or veterinary medicine

Must have experience with generation and characterization of recombinant viruses in cell culture and in animals; and skills in genetic engineering, RNA analysis, western blots, protein purification, radioisotope labeling of nucleic acids and proteins, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and multi-parametric flow cytometry. Must have served as an author on published peer reviewed research papers, and be listed as first author on at least two recent publications. Must be able to occasionally work nights and weekends (most work hours will be during normal business hours).

Preffered Qualification:
Ability to do statistical data analysis and ability to interact with lab personnel at all levels.
