When catastrophe hits, International Medical Corps is often one of the first humanitarian aid organizations on the scene providing rapid and effective aid that saves lives, reduces suffering, and promotes self-reliance.

International Medical Corps provides safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered care; offers needs-based response according to the context and type of sudden onset disaster (SOD) and/or outbreak in the affected nation; adopts a human rights-based approach to its response; ensures it is accessible to all sections of the population affected by the SOD and/or outbreak, particularly the vulnerable; and treats patients in a medically ethical manner.

International Medical Corps is accountable to patients and communities, host governments and ministries of health, and its organization and donors. International Medical Corps commits to a coordinated response under the national health emergency management authorities. International Medical Corps collaborates with the national health system, the clusters and the humanitarian community.

Selected personnel are on standby to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours. Personnel may deploy to new areas of operation or lend support to International Medical Corps teams already on the ground. International Medical Corps maintains a roster of volunteers and staff who have completed pre-deployment paperwork, orientation and training. The roster is updated on a regular basis. Through this expression of interest, applicants maintain professional profiles with International Medical Corps, so that information is complete and readily available for an emergency response deployment.

This position will support International Medical Corps' emergency response delivering outpatient clinical care to disaster-affected populations.

This position will not be compensated unless responders are deployed to an emergency response.

JOB SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of the Communications Officer ERT is to support the implementation of services in an emergency setting. The Communications Officer ERT works to increase International Medical Corps' visibility and raise awareness of the humanitarian issues that International Medical Corps addresses. This position is responsible for International Medical Corps' in-country media relations and creation of content used to promote International Medical Corps' response. The Communications Officer ERT will contribute to these efforts by serving as the field lead with the support and oversight of International Medical Corps' Global Communications department.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Participate in the creation of content to be used to promote the International Medical Corps response-including stories, presentations, talking points, photos, videos and audio materials-ensuring that all content gathered during the emergency response meets the full spectrum of compliance requirements for publication and use by International Medical Corps.

* Participate in media relations, public outreach and awareness initiatives, including coordinating and responding to inquiries, acting as a spokesperson, or identifying and preparing spokespeople for local, national and international media.

* Support the development and production of International Medical Corps visibility materials for field use, working with internal teams as well as outside vendors as appropriate.

* Add to the positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organization's Code of Conduct, ethics, values and standpoint regarding internal and external actors.

General

* Deployed personnel are expected to assist with the setup, maintenance and demobilization of the clinical spaces and base camp as required.

Policy Adherence

* Actively promote PSEA (prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and among beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.

* Adhere to the Code of Conduct, maintain humanitarian principles and respect international humanitarian law at all times.

The fluid nature of emergency response requires personnel to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape; duties may be reconfigured to meet operational requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Typically, a Bachelor's Degree in Communications or related field is preferred. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

* Typically, 3+ years of relevant progressive experience in media, PR and communications

* Organizational and time-management skills; ability to prioritize work, yet multitask in a fast-paced work setting

* Familiarity with print and web design fundamentals

* Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills

* Knowledge of international affairs and humanitarian issues

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and manage working relationships diplomatically

* Knowledge in managing information digitally

* Fluency in written and spoken English is required; fluency in Spanish, French or, Arabic is desirable
