Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Bioinformatician III - Statistical Geneticist is independently responsible for statistical genetic analyses of large-scale human genetic datasets. Will perform analyses of human genotyping and sequencing data and conduct meta-analyses of multiple datasets as well as genetic-epidemiologic analyses. Individual will submit publications in peer reviewed journals, present at scientific meetings, and grow in the academic environment.



Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Lead data analyses involving human genotyping and sequencing data
  • Conduct gene-environment and genetic-epidemiologic association analyses and analyze longitudinal studies
  • Develop methods to facilitate large scale and custom analyses of genotype-phenotype associations
  • Manage large datasets using the high-performance computing cluster
  • Establish and manage genomic and proteomic databases
  • Develop custom databases and web portals for managing raw and processed data
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other bioinformaticians, biostatisticians, information technology professionals, and interdepartmental project teams
  • Access and analyze public genomic databases to enhance analyses
  • Document the methods, analyses and all datasets used in analysis
  • Provide reports of design and results for inclusion in manuscript and grant applications
  • Develop or acquire new computational tools for data analysis
  • Present results at scientific meetings
  • Perform other duties as required


Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral degree Preferred in quantitative genetic-epidemiology, statistical genetics, computer science, bioinformatics
  • Minimal of master's degree required in statistical genetics, computer science, a related computational discipline, with experience listed below
  • 3 or more years of experience and working knowledge of genetic databases and websites; strong background in computational programs such as Operating Systems (e.g., UNIX, LINUX, Windows); Scripting languages (e.g., Perl, Python, Bash, Tcl); Programming languages (e.g., Java, C/C++) and statistical programming (R or MatLab), PLINK, SAS.
  • Proven ability to analyze human genotyping and sequencing data
  • Thorough knowledge of methods used in complex trait genetics, genomic research projects including quality control, knowledge of potential biases and how to control for them in study design and analyses.
  • Proficiency with large complex genetic data sets and high-performance computing
  • Experience with cloud-based computing
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic methods and analyses including longitudinal studies
  • Strong communication skills, both the oral and written necessary to interact with a wide range of individuals
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Proven research record with high quality publications and oral presentations preferable.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player, respectful and professional behavior, willing to teach and share

Highly qualified candidates will have:

  • Direct experience with analyses of genotyping and sequencing data with publications
  • Understanding of basic molecular biology
  • Ability to manage and steer research projects
  • Publications in top tier journals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
