Engineer - Technology Applications Center (TAC) position is responsible for supporting the operation of the TAC infrastructure to fulfill the testing requirements of the AIC Modernization Action Plan (MAP). This also includes researching and proposing new technology solutions that AIC could implement to improve the electric distribution system of the future.

Preferred work location is Champaign/Urbana IL area, however other central Illinois offices will be considered depending on the candidate selected.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Obtain technical and operational (including economic) understanding of TAC and microgrid technologies.
  • Analyze and approve Ameren and Vendor sponsored technology solutions for testing at the TAC. This includes development of test scope, assessment of infrastructure requirements, and creation of testing contracts that define test/analysis plans, cost estimates and labor requirements.
  • Research utility industry trends and identify potential technology solutions for testing and future implementation.
  • Perform Smart Inverter research to understand capabilities of TAC Distributed Energy Resource (DER) systems (Wind, Solar, Energy Storage). This also includes development of new research proposals to enhance TAC testing infrastructure.
  • Support development of standards based on testing results and/or research results.
  • Provide support, technical expertise and guidance to Illinois Distribution Control staff as well as Division engineering staff.
  • Support the Distribution Operations group for emergency response, and restoration efforts as requested.
  • Support development of relationships as well as identify collaboration/partnership opportunities with other technical research entities (EPRI, DOE, Universities)

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited college or university required. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited college or university preferred. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration preferred. Engineering experience preferred. Experience or demonstrated knowledge with power inverters, energy storage (stationary) or similar power electronics is preferred.
