General Notes

This position is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose

Assume co-leadership of the Center for Integrated Seismicity Research (CISR), working in close coordination with an existing co-PI and the outgoing PI to maintain the quality and growth of CISR

Responsibilities

  • Co-Lead CISR program and supervise CISR staff.
  • Conduct discipline-leading original research .
  • Engage in outside funding activities and promote program with stakeholders.
  • Organize and lead technical meetings with stakeholders.
  • Provide service to professional societies, the Bureau of Economic Geology and the Jackson School of Geosciences. Serve on committees as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations at scientific meetings and invited presentations.
  • Supervise graduate students and post doctoral researchers.
  • Maintain a robust scientific publication effort.
Required Qualifications

PhD in subsurface geosciences or engineering, with background expertise that could include structural geology, reservoir geomechanics, petroleum engineering, fluid flow modeling, geophysics/seismology, or closely related disciplines. A minimum of 10 years post-PhD degree experience in an active research environment. Ability to contribute and communicate across a broad range of subsurface geoscience and engineering discipline boundaries. Proven record of successful leadership in a research environment in industry, or in academia with industry sponsor collaboration. Strong record of scientific publications in international journals. Research performance, professional achievement, and leadership with international standing. Proven record of objectivity and balance, ability to coordinate and direct project activities in a collaborative research environment and to meet reporting and project deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing research programs and project needs. Possesses a professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Years of experience exceeding the minimum, a technical background that includes the required qualifications and adds a focus on subsurface geosciences or engineering disciplines that could include induced seismicity analysis and mitigation. Possess a background in geostatistics/data integration science and development of computer programs. Proven ability to secure external funding from private industry and lead an industry consortium. Successful fundraising and record of collaboration with state and federal agencies. Proven ability to interact with public and industry stakeholders on complex and potentially controversial scientific topics of public concern.

Salary Range

$105,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

  • Occasional weekend, overtime and evening work to meet deadlines.

  • Occasional interstate, intrastate, and international travel.

  • Field work as necessary.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
