Job Summary

Chairs are responsible to the dean in matters of department personnel and budget. Department chairs are leaders among the faculty in developing strong student advising, teaching, research, public service, and academic programs within their departments. As chair, you will have a reduced teaching load that can include general computer science courses, as well as courses within your area of expertise. You will also engage in scholarship and service activities as part of your workload. Chairs play an important role in integrating CWU's commitment to diversity and creating department learning environment that is welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all students.

The Computer Science Department at CWU hosts a career-focused computational science MS program. The department has educational foci in cybersecurity, machine learning, robotics, software engineering, and data science. The department houses facilities like a supercomputer that can be leveraged for high-impact faculty-mentored student projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science or closely related field.
  • Effective leadership skills as demonstrated by submitted written materials, stated accomplishments on the vita, and reference checks.
  • Effective communication skills as demonstrated by submitted written materials and stated accomplishments on the vita.
  • At least six years of professional academic experience or equivalent administrative experience in an educational setting.
  • Teaching, scholarship, and service profile commensurate with a tenure appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in the use of inclusive teaching methodologies and approaches that will engage and inspire students from all racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring/advising a multicultural population to expand and enhance their educational experience and career goals within and outside traditional classroom settings in accordance with the university philosophy supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and academic success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful recent academic leadership and administrative experience that demonstrates the ability to strongly advocate for excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and service.
  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate and graduate classroom teaching or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in engaging and/or mentoring minoritized or underserved students in research, academic or professional opportunities, including programs designed to broaden participation of students in STEM.
  • Evidence of excellence in advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to collaboratively manage programs across multiple sites using multiple modalities.
  • Commitment to secure external funding for student-centered teaching, research, and outreach opportunities.
  • Commitment to continual program improvement including external accreditation and assessment.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience

Appointment: Full-Time, Tenured, 10 Month Appointment. Additional Summer teaching may be available.

Central Washington University is on the quarter system with appointments from mid-September through mid-June.
