Part-Time/ON CALL Court Crier

SUMMARY

The Court Crier assists the Judge and courtroom personnel. The Crier is responsible for the courtroom and is able to prioritize all judicial needs in an efficient and competent manner, while maintaining security and order at all times. The Crier performs duties as they relate to the selection of and assistance with the jury.

This is an "On Call" position. The purpose of the On Call Crier is to be available to fill in when another Crier is unavailable, or when it is necessary to add to the courtroom complement. There is no guarantee of a schedule or the number of hours someone in this position will work.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Chambers responsibilities, including:
    1. Opens robing room and courtroom: turns on lights, sets up judge's desk for the day;
    2. Assists with clerical tasks including: makes copies, answers phones;
    3. Obtains files when necessary;
    4. Covers phones and opens mail when secretary is unavailable;
    5. Coordinates meetings between counsel and judge in robing room; greets, signs in counsel, and escorts counsel to chambers.
  • Courtroom responsibilities, including:
    1. Places cases in the order in which they are to be called;
    2. Assists court clerk: distributes necessary paperwork, delivers court papers;
    3. Hands copies of exhibits from counsel to witness and from witness and/or counsel to judge;
    4. Ensures there is water for the courtroom (Judge, plaintiff & defense, and jury);
    5. Ensure all parties are present; has missing persons paged to the courtroom;
    6. Ensures all present in the courtroom are aware of the appropriate courtroom decorum;
    7. Introduces the interpreter to the LEP person and/or counsel;
    8. Swears in witnesses;
    9. Provides information to Court Services when courtroom matters breakdown, etc.;
    10. Ensures all necessary security measures are taken by Deputies assigned to the courtroom;
    11. Coordinates with Deputies bringing detainees from the detention area.
  • Jury responsibilities, including:
    1. Escorts jury panels from Jury Marshalling room to courtrooms;
    2. Assists in jury selection - set out number cards, etc.;
    3. Provides for the sequestering of jurors, if necessary.
  • OTHER DUTIES OF THE JOB:

    1. Performs related work as assigned;
    2. Attends meetings, trainings and seminars as required.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

    Receives instruction from the Supervising Judge, Court Clerk and/or their designee.

    SUPERVISION GIVEN:

    While this is a non-supervisory position, this position may give occasional instruction to other staff as needed (i.e. for training purposes).


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    1. Basic knowledge of court procedures;
    2. Ability to respond to a situation in an expedient and efficient manner;
    3. Ability to utilize computer software/hardware and other office equipment necessary to carry out essential work functions;
    4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
    5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
    6. Must possess initiative and problem solving skills;
    7. Must possess ability to function independently and exercise good judgment.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions;
    • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods throughout the workday, with intermittent periods of movement necessary to carry out job duties;
    • Must be able to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds;
    • Works indoors in adequate workspace temperatures, ventilation and lighting;
    • Works with average indoor exposures to noise and stress, but subject to frequent disruptions and stress.
