Job Description
Job Summary

The Pediatric Dental Hygienist provides dental hygiene, patient education and appropriate referrals as needed for the care and treatment of patients in an integrated clinic of medical, behavioral health and dental services.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides dental services for pediatric and pregnant patients at Eastside Family Health Center's Pediatric and Women's Care clinics. Together with clinic staff, develops care coordination and work flow plans with the intent of improving oral health care outcomes. Interviews patients to obtain medical and dental histories. Takes and develops radiographs. Visual inspection of oral cavity for cavities, other hard tissue anomalies and cancer screening. Provision of fluoride and sealant applications. Prophies, scaling and root planing. Provides oral health assessment and education including caries risk assessment, tobacco cessation, dietary counseling, child/adult prophylactic treatment to temporize emergent dental cavities in preparation for restorative care by the dentist. Performance of case management with explanation of effective treatment plans, referral to dental providers as needed and follow-up on treatment plans. Documents patient data in electronic health record and collaborates with health care team to provide dental/medical coordination. Care and management of dental instruments including cleaning and inventory in conjunction with sterile processing team. (70%)
  • Works in the Eastside Dental Clinic with the dental team. Performs dental care with scaling, root planning procedures. Removal of granulation and degenerated tissue from the periodontal pocket through curettage. Gives local injections as required. Provides preventative measures including the application of fluorides and other recognized topical agents for the prevention of oral disease. Interview patients to obtain medical and dental histories and caries risk assessments. Takes and develops radiographs (20%)
  • Management of grant activities including collecting and reporting monthly metrics, budget reports, inventory, productivity, submission of dental claims and working with Medicaid, Child Health Plan Plus and commercial dental insurance plans. Actively participates in the coaching and training offered by the project team. Participates in the evaluation of the project. (10%)

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years Dental Hygienist in a dental office setting Required

Licenses:
  • DENTALHY-Dental Hygenist - JCNDE - Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations Required
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association
  • LOCAL-Local Anesthesia - State Board of Dentistry

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of dental hygiene procedures and techniques sufficient to be able to perform the full scope of preventive dental hygiene services, including oral health screenings, education, fluoride treatment, sealants, prophies, scaling and root planning, and dental referrals.
  • Ability to function as part of a multi-discipline healthcare team yet with autonomy as the sole dental provider.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy with potential cultural and diversity dynamics.
  • Ability to discern information from others in a variety of formats and communicate information to others in a manner that ensures complete communication.
