Job Summary

The UCSF HEAL (Health, Equity, Action, and Leadership) Initiative is recruiting a full-time Operations Senior Officer based in Oakland California (once in person work resumes). The Operations Senior Officer will have internally and externally facing responsibilities in finance, operations, and communication to support HEAL to deliver on our mission.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM), UCSF. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care and public service. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, SFGH, VAMC, Mt. Zion) and approximately 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rest with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus site and directs the Vice Chairs/Chiefs at the ZSFG and VAMC sites.
The Division of Hospital Medicine (DHM) is the largest divisions in the Department of Medicine (DOM) and is a national leader in clinical care, education, research, and quality improvement. The Division runs 12 clinical services and provides care for nearly half of the patients in the adult hospital on any given day. The Division is comprised of ~149 faculty, 20 MSP Physicians, 30 fellows, and 35 staff. Additionally, it solicits from a cadre of 100 physicians, fellows, and residents outside the division for moonlighting services.
The HEAL (Health, Equity, Action, and Leadership) Initiative is the largest fellowship program within DHM.

The HEAL Initiative focuses on realizing global health equity through training and building a transnational community of passionate health workers. We are looking for one new member to join our small and spirited team.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience
  • High detail orientation & self-management.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.
  • Experience with Operations or Finance in a University Setting
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, accounting and payroll.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
  • Accounting, consulting, or operations/management experience
  • Experience in development, communications, or operations roll of an early-stage organization or an organization serving the underserved.
