We are the Human and Object Understanding (HOUr) team within the System Intelligence and Machine Learning (SIML) group. We are an applied R&D team that develops core technologies for visual perception and reasoning that power various applications across the Apple eco-system. Real-time always-on object detection (Center Stage, Cinematic Mode), facial attributes (Photographic Styles), person recognition (Photos Memories, HomeKit camera), spoof detection (IDs in Wallet), text ROI detection (Live Text), fine-grained breed classification (Visual Lookup), and image in-painting (Photos Edit) are just some of the core technologies the team has developed that have contributed to some of Apple's most beloved features recently.
Key Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with theory and practice of deep learning and other relevant machine learning approaches
  • Hands-on experience with deep learning toolkits, such as PyTorch & TensorFlow
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong programming skills in Python
  • Familiarity with C++, with the ability/willingness to ramp up as needed
  • Experience collaborating on large ML software projects, with sound s/w development practices applied to building and maintaining ML modeling code-base
  • Awareness of concepts of algorithmic complexity, GPU/CPU utilization, I/O bandwidth, and optimization methods to ensure efficiency of ML solutions
  • Ability to provide technical leadership on ML projects from start to finish
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, be comfortable presenting research to large audiences
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with team members of different backgrounds
Description
As a member of the SIML-HOUr team, you will develop ground breaking computer vision solutions that will be crucial for enabling high-impact features. You will work closely with product teams and other partners to help define what vision technologies need to be developed and how these will benefit the product roadmap. You will be responsible for further advancing or building new capabilities in visual perception and reasoning, ranging from object detection and recognition to generative modeling and 3D geometry. As a technical contributor, your main tasks in this position will include algorithm and ML model design, ML training, data and annotation specifications, benchmarking, prototyping and integrating the technology into the next generation of Apple products and services.
Education & Experience
M.S. or PhD in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science or a related field (mathematics, physics or computer engineering)

Pay & Benefits
  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $130,000 and $242,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
