Job Details:

Purpose

To lead the X-Ray Diffraction Core Facility at an R-1 research institution and to teach a graduate level course in the fundamentals of X-ray diffraction.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth training and guidance in single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the Department of Chemistry and other campus departments. Develop and teach once annually, a graduate-level class in the fundamentals of X-ray diffraction, space group analysis and hands-on structural solutions using SHELX, OLEX and other common software programs.

  • Assist Faculty and initiate the development of Instrumentation Grants (NSF, NIH, etc.) and acquisitions related to X-ray diffraction instrumentation to maintain a state-of-the-art facility for small molecule crystallography and materials analysis.

  • Analyze samples submitted to the departmental X-ray core facility comprised primarily of the following instruments: a Rigaku Synergy XRD, an Agilent Supernova XRD, and Rigaku Spider PXRD instrument. Determine crystal structures, provide reports, CIF files and check CIF files for samples that are suitable for publication, including the necessary figures and tables. Provide expertise in the solution and refinement of problematic structures. Respond as needed to reviewers' comments related to structures.

  • Ensure instrument reliability, stable facility operation, and consistent revenue generation by 1) Performing routine maintenance and repairs on facility instrumentation and arranging for outside service as needed. 2) Maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies of consumables and other necessary items, placing orders as needed. 3) Working with department administration and core facility committee to establish appropriate facility fees and to purchase appropriate instrumentation. 4) Implementation of directives of the Department Chair and Faculty Core Facility Committee.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Chemistry with focus on X-ray diffraction analysis. 5+ years of post-graduate experience with single-crystal and powder diffraction techniques and structure solution in a laboratory setting. A demonstrated history of intellectual contributions to the field of crystallography and teaching should be evident in the research profile. A demonstrated history of submitted grant applications, ideally with successful acquisitions, will be positively viewed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience holding a Directorship or Assistant Directorship in an existing academic X-ray diffraction core facility.

Salary Range

$102,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
