Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Chief Forensic Pathologist, is responsible for performing post-mortem examinations, including microscopic and toxicology studies to determine official cause and manner of death in legally required cases. Investigates and identifies cause of death using approved medical procedures and notifies next of kin. Conducts authorized autopsies, performs macroscopic studies of organs and fluids, microscopic studies of tissues, and prepares reports detailing post-mortem inspections, including conditions relating to trauma and disease, and a statement relating to cause of death. Testifies as an expert witness in criminal cases in Oakland County regarding findings. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Copy of License to practice medicine in Michigan

At time of application, applicant must:

1. Be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.

Note: Applicants not possessing State of Michigan licensure can be conditionally accepted but must obtain State of Michigan license to practice medicine, at applicant's expense, before an offer of employment will be extended.

2. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.

3. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

Special Requirements

1. Maintain licensure to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.

2. Maintain legal designation as the Deputy Medical Examiner for Oakland County.

3. Submit annual tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray, at County expense.

Note: Per FY2007 Adopted Budget, employees in this classification will receive a bonus if they earn and maintain certification in Forensic Pathology.
