Hands on Veterinary Technician patient care within a hospital setting.

Position Summary |
This incumbent will support the daily operations of the new Nutrition service within the
UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The Nutrition
RVT will work closely with out Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist in developing dietary plans for inpatient and outpatient client owned animals coming to the nutrition service for assistance and treatment. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
a) Registered veterinary technician qualification with active license.
b) Clinical experience with a minimum rating of "successful" at annual reviews.
c) Accumulated relevant/approved career development training (not CE).
d) Demonstration of specific competencies as evaluated by service faculty and veterinary technician/nurse supervisor.
1. Interact and effectively communicate with a variety of personnel and display excellent interpersonal skills.
2. Apply common sense when carrying out verbal and written instructions.
3. Work in a fast paced environment.
4. Exhibit attention to detail.
5. Understand advanced medical terminology. |
Physical Demands |
1. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
2. Sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
3. Work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
4. Wear protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
5. Work for long periods of time with arms extended. |

- Perform basic to advanced patient care, which may include: obtain vitals (temperature, pulse, and respiration rates), observation and recognition of appropriate animal behavior and demeanor (e.g. bright and alert, quiet and responsive, depressed, moribund), prepare and administer medications at the direction of a veterinarian, maintaining detailed and accurate electronic and written patient medical records (including communications), accurately communicate changes in patient details and status, perform patient sample collection (including blood collection, cystocentesis), and submission at the direction of a veterinarian.
- Assisting the Nutritionist with dietary plans and patient care.

- Assisting Client Care with scheduling initial consultations and recheck consultations.
- Data mining medical records for pertinent information.
- Taking detailed notes during telemedicine consultations.
- Reviewing discharge summaries, custom diet plans, and emails for typographical/grammatical errors.
- Updating Excel spreadsheets and Access databases with patient and client information.
- Adding, reviewing, and approving charges for services.
