Job Description
Penn Mutual is seeking an experienced and proven Director, Software Engineering to lead our financial services development teams and provide strategic direction for future IT initiatives. You will be leading teams that build software to deliver business value in the financial services area. The ideal candidate has a software engineering background, with practical data platforms and systems integration knowledge and experience, as well as direct management responsibility for software development teams. Excellent communication skills in both technical and business areas are a must. You will be responsible for working with, understanding, and providing guidance to the business.
- As a Director, Software Engineering, you'll partner, provide leadership, and manage multiple agile teams of experienced software engineers, removing impediments and enabling the teams to deliver business value.
- Assist the AVP, Software Architecture to define and manage priorities, technical strategies for modernization, and operational standards across the organization.
- Ensure team ownership of legacy systems with an emphasis on maintaining operational stability.
- Be a passionate leader committed to the development and mentorship of your teams.
- Partner with business and IT stakeholders to ensure alignment with key corporate priorities.
- Share ideas and work to bring people together to help solve sophisticated problems.
- Create a positive and collaborative environment by championing open communication and soliciting continuous feedback.
- Stay current with new technology trends and continue to develop your leadership brand.
- Participates in the discussion and documentation of best practices and standards for application development
- Complies with all company policies and procedures
- Remains current in profession and industry trends
- Successfully completes regulatory and job training requirements
- Helps product owners with issue prioritization and contributes to project scoping
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
- 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with any object-oriented language, Java preferred.
- 5+ years of experience architecting and enhancing data platforms and service-oriented architectures.
- 5+ years of leadership and management experience
- Experience working within Agile/DevSecOps development environments.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- Experience with distributed compute engines, Spark/Hadoop preferred.
- More recent experience in Cloud development preferred.
- Experience working with modern, web-based architectures, including REST APIs, Serverless, event-driven microservices.
Desired Experience
- Experience working with financial management stakeholders.
- Life Insurance or financial services industry experience a plus.
- Implementation background of installing a large ERP platform in a SaaS environment a plus.
