Job Summary

This position will provide support for research infrastructure in the schools within the College of Computing. The position will support scalable activities in which technologies can be applied across schools and research groups to support commonly used resources to take advantage of economies of scale and equipment and facilities of the schools and their research groups. These support tasks include consulting with faculty and researchers to determine equipment needs; documenting the requirements; working with the vendors to design systems; obtaining quotes; getting stakeholder approvals; initiating purchases; deploying, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the research facilities; and providing knowledge continuity, consulting, and education for graduate students as they transition through the research groups.

Responsibilities

Key job responsibilities include:

1. Work within the CoC Technology Support Organization (TSO) Research Program Support Group regarding:

  • implementation of CoC technical plans, infrastructure, policies and procedures in research facilities;
  • coordinate the provisioning of OIT and TSO services to meet faculty and student needs;
  • coordinate efforts with other TSO research technologists to develop conventions and lessen duplication;
  • offer expertise to the planning and design efforts of all TSO teams;
  • conduct and enable computing and network research initiatives, overseeing research and development of the necessary technology and infrastructure;
  • participate in campus-wide forums for information exchange, planning, and policy regarding campus research technology initiatives and collaborative projects.

2. As part of TSO, provide project planning and technical leadership for the schools and research groups:

  • work with school chair [s], senior faculty and staff to develop technology strategy, policy and procedures;
  • provide primary point of contact to faculty, staff, students for technical matters relating to research infrastructure;
  • work with lab managers in support of strategic research facilities;
  • manage technical problems, requests, projects to assure quick resolution, best practices and excellent customer service;
  • develop and coordinate technical aspects of research grant proposals;
  • act as liaison to GT/OIT, other GT units and external research partners with regard to research computing capabilities;
  • provide bid and proposal costing for strategic technologies;
  • be aware of and discuss technology trends and new products that could be used to enhance research facilities.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.

Higher education experience, experience managing technology in a highly distributed, multi-vendor environment supporting research.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to conceptualize immediate and future research technologies. Possess specific knowledge and experience of a wide-range of technologies including: MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, TCP/IP, network security, HTML, databases (e.g. mySQL), storage technologies such as RAID, file sharing protocols, backup/restore processes, fluency in multiple programming and scripting languages (e.g. Java, Perl, PHP, etc.). Possess excellent communication skills and ability to make technical presentations; the ability to create technical documentation; a strong service orientation; and the ability to work well with other professionals in providing technical solutions in an advanced computing environment. Possess a proven ability to provide leadershil, coordination, and assistance of technical personnel.
