Principal Materials & Processes Engineer - Polymers, Composites, and Soft Materials

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you be responsible for the selection, design, and process development of polymers, composites, and soft (non-metallic) materials for various spaceflight systems.You will work directly with internal customers and collaborate with a team of engineers and technicians to solve material challenges throughout Blue Origin.This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as subject matter expert in materials selection, testing, and development support for Blue Origin's family of launch vehicles and engines
  • Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to define material requirements and successfully implement production solutions
  • Lead materials and process selection, testing, and qualification efforts
  • Engage with external suppliers to develop new materials and processes for demanding operational conditions unique to space vehicle structures
Qualifications:
  • M.S. degree or higher in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field
  • 12+ years of experience with materials and process development and qualification in a production manufacturing environment
  • Deep expertise in polymer and composite materials for structural and non-structural applications
  • Expertise in adhesives and bonding processes
  • Familiarity with soft materials used in structural and propulsion applications (e.g. O-rings, seals, lubricants)
  • Demonstrated experience preparing specifications, test reports, and other documentation
  • Experience developing and executing plans for material characterization, such as mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and chemical analysis
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a diversity of customers
  • Ability to organize and motivate teams of technical professionals, and provide mentorship to less experienced employees
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired:
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field
  • Familiarity with typical aerospace composites and related materials (prepregs, fibers, resins, cores, adhesives, coatings, etc.)
  • Expertise in high-temperature polymer matrix composite materials
  • Experience with aerospace composite manufacturing processes including prepreg, wet layup, sandwich fabrication, and automated manufacturing methodologies (e.g. AFP, ATL)
  • Experience with additively manufactured non-metallics
  • Experience with cryogenic application of non-metallic materials, for pressurized and unpressurized structures
  • Hands-on composite fabrication experience
  • Hands-on experience with composite mechanical testing
  • Experience or knowledge in analytical methods and tools (i.e. DMA, DSC, mechanical testing)
  • Experience with Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs)
