The George Mason University Police Department (Mason Police) invites applications for the position of Housing Locksmith within the Physical Security section of Mason Police. The Housing Locksmith supports the mission of Mason Police by providing a safe and secure environment for all university employees, students, and visitors as they pursue their daily work and study activities, consistent with the laws of the commonwealth and the policies of the university. Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Housing Locksmith position are to develop, maintain, and install electronic and physical door lock hardware systems for the residence halls as well as:

  • Operate as directed within the University's housing system comprised of over 40 residential facilities throughout all GMU campuses;
  • Perform general locksmith duties in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Respond to emergency lock calls;
  • Conduct master-keying, re-keying, installation and repair of all types of locks, including mortise lock, rim cylinders, pad locks, file cabinets locks, key duplication, etc.;
  • Maintain stand-alone access control systems, including OMNI lock systems and the Simplex Series locks and ensuring updated audits on all units;
  • Ensure upkeep of equipment supply inventory and work orders records;
  • Provide good customer service and assistance to staff and customers in troubleshooting lock and key systems;
  • Maintain inventory;
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work space; and
  • Serve on an On-Call basis during weekends and evenings as necessary.


Required Qualifications:

  • Possess a locksmith certification (e.g., Foley Belsaw certification, advanced locksmith certification, best certified in keystone 600 master keying product, or be able to obtain such certifications during employment);
  • Knowledge of technical door and locksmith trades;
  • Ability to set up master keying systems;
  • Possess excellent customer service and communication skills;
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery;
  • Ability to be subjected to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions;
  • Comfortable with climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crunching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office;
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and quality in workmanship;
  • Possesses excellent problem-solving skills;
  • High school education and related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Successful completion of a polygraph examination, thorough background check, and fingerprinting;
  • No felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, and valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of Mason's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 . Note - The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Locksmith training from locksmith institute;
  • Familiarity with Simple K Software, School Dude, or similar systems; and
  • Knowledge and experience with BEST keying system.
