The Speech Therapist - Coordinator oversees subordinate staff members; identifies needs in program planning; facilitates program development; and provides speech and language therapy services at the Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) Palisades Medical Center (PMC).



Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Speech Pathologist Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

    Performs speech. Language, voice, fluency, cognition and swallowing assessment and evaluations on a daily basis, on-going reassessment and administers speech/language and swallowing treatments to patients as requested by physicians. Some direct exposure to blood/body fluid from patients, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed.
  • Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Implements treatment program for disorders of speech, language and swallowing.
  • Provides specialized information to staff, patient's family in resolving problems affecting speech, language and swallowing.
  • Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
  • Practices a daily multidisciplinary approach in executing patient treatment. Coordinates with physician, Social Services/Discharge Planning to provide for continuation of treatment upon discharge.
  • Develops and maintains Policies & Procedures pertinent to speech/language.
  • Develops and maintains Quality Assurance/Improvement program in speech/language section.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  • Keeps Director informed of progress and problems.
  • Attends hospital and department educational in-services as required.
  • Performs educational in-services to Hospital staff as required.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.


Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology.
  • Acute care and pediatric experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time appropriately to meet both patient and departmental needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively and courteously work with a diverse group of patients and personnel.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Minimum of 3 or more years of experience in practice of speech therapy in a Hospital setting.
  • Bilingual (Spanish speaking) strongly preferred.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Certificate Clinical Competence Speech Language Pathology.
  • Speech Language Pathology License.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
