Position description

The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as our Arts & Humanities Collection Strategist and Visual Arts Liaison Librarian (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). This position reports to the Director of the Library's Collection Development & Management Program (CDM).

Responsibilities of the Position

Arts & Humanities Collection Strategist

Collections within the Arts & Humanities portfolio support the Departments of Visual Arts, Music, Literature, Philosophy, and Theatre & Dance, as well as related disciplines, such as World History and European Studies, Film Studies and Classical Studies.

Key responsibilities as a Collection Strategist include:

* Oversees budget allocations and expenditures for the Arts & Humanities related funds. Provides collections-related information, direction, support, and training to subject librarians selecting materials in these fields.

* Provides leadership and guidance in envisioning the future direction of collections including budget sustainability, open access initiatives, and digital collection development.

* Reviews and provides feedback for new resources, renewals, and cancellations. Provides campus input on UC-wide licensed resources.

* Represents Arts & Humanities interests on scholarly communication issues. Participates in local and UC system-wide groups for scholarly communications, open access, and transformative agreements.

* Represents Arts & Humanities subjects in decision-making for the physical collections. Coordinates weeding and space-optimization projects for existing physical collections. Provides input and recommendations in managing physical collections in the context of UC Shared Print Initiatives and other regional and national consortia.

* Represents the Library on appropriate UC-wide Common Knowledge Groups (comprised of selectors and librarians with common subject responsibilities at other UC campuses). Participate in, and in some cases, coordinate licensing terms and agreements for resources with publishers and other UC Libraries.

Subject Librarian for Visual Arts

Liaison assignment includes the Department of Visual Arts and the Film Studies Program within the Institute of Arts and Humanities.

Key responsibilities of an academic liaison include:

* Serves as the primary contact and information resource on library services, resources, and policies for faculty, researchers and students in the Visual Arts Department and Film Studies Program.

* Actively engages with faculty and students in arts-affiliated programs and other groups performing arts initiatives

* Provides research consultation, reference, outreach, and instruction services to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, teaching and learning endeavors.

* Develops collections to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of students and faculty.

* Serves as campus liaison to ARTstor.

* Develops digital collections and digital exhibits.

* Works closely with Special Collections & Archives on collections, exhibits, and user support

* Serves as a resource for information on data services, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship.

* Collaborates with other subject and functional specialists within the Library to support interdisciplinary Library users in finding resources, analyzing and managing information, and promoting library services relating to Visual Arts.

About the Visual Arts Department

Offers graduate MFA and PhD degree programs, and undergraduate degrees in Art History, Theory and Criticism, Media, Art Studio, Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts, and Speculative Design, as well as minors in areas of study such as Digital Video and Film Production and Photography.

About the Film Studies Program

Film Studies offers an undergraduate minor within the Institute of Arts and Humanities. It provides students an exciting opportunity to examine the many facets of U.S. and international cinema and engage in the analysis of cinematic works of various forms.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

* MLS/MLIS, or equivalent advanced degree or relevant library experience.

* Demonstrated experience in collection development and management in a professional library setting.

* Familiarity with electronic and scholarly resources and reference tools in the Arts & Humanities.

* Experience providing advanced research assistance and library instruction.

* Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, time management, collaboration and problem-solving skills.

* Experience planning, documenting, and completing projects.

* Demonstrated commitment to excellence in service.

* Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in collection building and scholarly communications.

Preferred qualifications

* Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the Arts & Humanities.

* Experience with collections budget work, such as managing and overseeing a collections budget, tracking expenditures, and forecasting financial needs.

* Experience with developing digital collections, including evaluating opportunities and developing proposals.
