About the Job

This researcher will be support one or more projects related to the development of metallic, ceramic, and composite materials for use in extreme environments (e.g., combinations of high temperature, high stress, and materials-environment interactions). Depending on the background experience and interests of the researcher, tasks will include a combination of modeling to design materials and predict performance, and experimental efforts involving materials synthesis, testing material properties and behavior under various application-relevant conditions, and materials characterization using x-ray, electron microscopy, and optical spectroscopy techniques.

60% materials synthesis, characterization, and data analysis
20% mentoring of graduate and/or undergraduate students working on the same research projects
20% assisting preparation of proposals, project reports, and/or publications

Qualifications

Required qualifications: PhD in materials science engineering or a related discipline with demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas:
+ Experimental or computational studies of high temperature materials performance including topics such as degradation phenomena (oxidation, hot corrosion), phase stability, or mechanical or thermomechanical properties.
+ Transmission electron microscopy, including experience with high resolution imaging and advanced spectroscopic and diffraction-based characterization methods.

Preferred qualifications: Experience in one or more of the following areas: alloy or ceramic processing, thermal analysis (TGA/DTA/DSC), characterization using techniques such as SEM and XRD, development of new experimental equipment and testing procedures employing high temperature furnaces, application of data-driven approaches for materials development, and demonstrated experience in written scientific communication evidenced through archival publications.
