Position Summary
Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Department of Human Performance and Sport invite applications for two full-time tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. These are nine-month faculty appointments beginning August 2023. For the first position, the ideal candidate will be a specialist in the area of wellness/behavior modification and must be able to teach the following courses: Behavioral Aspects of Physical Activity, Exercise and Sport, Fitness and Exercise Coaching, Physiology of Exercise, Community Fitness Programs, and Physical Fitness Techniques and Programs. For the second position, the ideal candidate will be a specialist in chronic health conditions and must be able to teach the following courses: Physiology of Exercise, Fitness Programs for Special Populations, Fitness Programs for Child, Adolescents, and Older Adults, Exercise Electrocardiography, Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Community Fitness Testing, and Physical Fitness Techniques and Programs.
Candidates will be expected to teach in the classroom as well as in the laboratory setting and must be able to use and apply current technologies in the classroom. In addition, the successful candidates will be expected to advise and mentor undergraduate students, provide service to the department, school, university and profession, assume active roles in appropriate professional organizations, engage in scholarship activities, and supervise student fieldwork experiences. The successful candidates will be vital members of the Exercise Science faculty and will be required to follow all faculty responsibilities described in the MSU Denver Faculty Handbook.

Duties/Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Teaching 9 credit hours per semester of undergraduate coursework
  2. Advising students
  3. Providing academic service to the department, college, university, and community/profession
  4. Engaging in scholarly activities appropriate to the discipline

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Doctorate in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or a related discipline. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, however, the degree must be conferred prior to the start of appointment
  • Higher education teaching experience in the Exercise Science/Physiology discipline
  • Professional experience in the exercise industry

Preferred Qualifications
Position 1 (Wellness/behavior modification)

  • Professional experience in wellness/behavior modification; exercise promotion or telemedicine/health-related data analysis
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate college teaching in the field of exercise science/physiology
  • Involvement as a member of national/international professional associations related to exercise, health, and/or wellness
  • Certification from the National Strength & Conditioning Association Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and/or American College of Sports Medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC) or Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP)


Position 2 (Chronic health conditions)

  • Previous experience in an applied clinical setting working with individuals who have chronic health conditions
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate college teaching in the field of exercise science/physiology
  • Involvement as a member of national/international professional associations related to exercise, health, and/or wellness
  • Current certification from a NCCA accredited organization (ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, NCSF, etc.). Special consideration will be given to those with American College of Sports Medicine's Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification
