Position description

FACULTY POSITION, Medicinal Chemistry

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

University of California, San Francisco

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF seeks applications for non-tenure-track faculty in Medicinal Chemistry or interdisciplinary research involving pharmaceutical chemistry, with appointment beginning in July 2023. A Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required, as well as 15+ years of experience in either an industrial or academic drug discovery setting at the time of appointment. Candidate's application materials must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission. Candidates are expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will lead the Hit Discovery and Optimization team at UCSF's Small Molecule Discovery Center (SMDC) and will lead a team of 3-5 medicinal chemists and trainees focused on the intersection of chemical biology and drug discovery using structure-based design, artificial intelligence, and synthesis.

The successful candidate will be an independent self-starter with experience and knowledge of contemporary synthetic organic chemistry and screening technologies. Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills are a must.

The SMDC is team-based organization consisting of multiple disciplines (primarily chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and biology). Excellent communication and leadership skills are required to motivate our diverse team of professional scientists and trainees to pursue or targets with the same sense of urgency often seen in biotech. Collaborations with partners in academia, industry, and government-run consortia are common. Chemistry plays a central role in research at the SMDC, and thus a vital part of this position involves collaborating with a wide range of biologists, bioinformatics, engineers, and physician scientists.
