ESG Stakeholder Activation Lead - Remote

UHG is committed to engaging with a variety of relevant stakeholders to advance and continuously refresh our ESG strategy and enhance our performance. As UHG seeks new ways of developing innovative solutions to modernize the health system and achieve our sustainability goals, this role will play a critical role in catalyzing engagement internally across the enterprise of nearly 400k colleagues globally and with multiple external stakeholder groups (e.g., investors, customers, consumers, suppliers). They will also play a pivotal role in supporting the enterprise ESG Steering Committee, consisting of senior business and functional leaders. In order to remain on the forefront and ahead of the rapidly evolving ESG landscape, this role will be instrumental in proactively gathering input, gauging expectations, and assessing UHG's ESG reputation among stakeholders. They will also need to assess new opportunities, synthesize relevant information, and communicate outcomes clearly to both internal and external audiences.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Design, implement and facilitate a structured, continuous feedback loop related to ESG perceptions and expectations with internal and external stakeholders, partnering with relationship owners, as needed (e.g., IR with investors, Procurement with suppliers, National Accounts with customers)
  • Monitor, assess and benchmark stakeholder feedback to facilitate decisions and mobilize action plans towards performance improvement
  • Support senior leadership forums (e.g., ESG Steering Committee, Board Cmte, Corp Secretary), including preparing meeting pre-read decks, facilitating discussion, ensuring follow-up actions are completed, and ongoing operational support
  • Collaborate with internal communications to convene internal ESG conversations among colleagues to help drive awareness, obtain feedback, and catalyze calls to action related to our ESG goals
  • Collaborate with members of the Sustainability function (DEI, Social Impact, Health Equity) with regards to external stakeholder groups under their purview
  • Identify thought leaders and key opinion leaders in fields related to ESG/ Sustainability for internal awareness raising and education activities
  • Assess opportunities to establish an external advisory board or council
  • Assess opportunities and benefits to conducting formal ESG priority assessments, lead implementation, and go-forward priority monitoring efforts
  • Accountable for describing stakeholder engagement process and outcomes in the annual Sustainability Report (e.g., number and format of engagement, insights obtained, actions taken in response)
  • Serve as a liaison with members of the Sustainability function to foster inclusive and integrated brainstorming across teams
  • Manage internal ESG resources/training/content

Required Qualifications:



  • 5+ years of professional experience within an internal/external stakeholder engagement function
  • 2+ years of experience managing and conducting structured stakeholder research (e.g., online, structured surveys, focus groups, roundtable discussions)
  • 2+ years of experience related to sustainability issues for a large corporation, preferably in the healthcare field
  • Demonstrated experience supporting change management projects, including setting strategy and action plans
  • Demonstrated experience building strong relationships across internal functions and with external stakeholders
  • Experience navigating and synthesizing various qualitative viewpoints and quantitative data points
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort with delivering clean, concise messaging to senior leadership audiences
  • Ability to create relevant presentation materials (e.g., PowerPoint, infographics) for senior leadership audiences

  • Highly organized with solid attention to detail

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $66,100 to $118,300. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $72,800 to $129,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
