Join the JAMA team as a Deputy Editor JAMA and
Multimedia. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a month in the office.

The Deputy Editor JAMA and
Multimedia will evaluate, review, and edit scientific
manuscripts and other content for publication; participate in author outreach
efforts and recruit high quality research for submission to JAMA. Responsible
for guiding and building the strategic plan for JAMA Network multimedia and
management and oversight of Digital Media staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manuscripts for publication in JAMA

  • Critically review submitted manuscripts; coordinate peer review; communicate with authors about editorial decisions/revisions; provide detailed assessment of revised manuscripts for internal review; edit manuscripts accepted for publication and review all assigned proofs before publication.
  • Identifies prospective Editorialists and solicits and reviews Editorials with Executive Editor.

JAMA Network multimedia

  • With the Editor in Chief, other Editors, and Digital Media Production team, build, execute, and oversee the strategic plan for audio and video content and programs, enhancement and expansion of digital media reach and uptake, and innovative approaches for new programs and products.
  • Recognize and be responsive to trends, news, and research developments in medicine and public health and direct coverage in audio and video content and programs.
  • Provide direction and oversight for the Digital Media Production team, including for creation, review, and approval of audio and video content and promotion of multimedia content development.
  • Review and approve audio and video content for quality and accuracy.
  • Attend weekly multimedia meetings.
  • Participate in occasional podcast interviews.

JAMA content and author outreach

  • Attend JAMA manuscript meetings and issue makeup meetings, participating in discussions and decision-making regarding manuscripts and other content.
  • Communicate detailed recommendations about manuscripts to associate editors, senior editorial staff, and authors, and ensure resulting revised and published manuscripts address scientific, methodologic, and presentation issues identified.
  • Serve as a member of the JAMA Editorial team, participating actively and contributing to author outreach activities, recruitment of major research reports, and as requested, representing JAMA at academic meetings.
  • With the Editor in Chief, other executive Editors, and the Author Outreach Administrator, identify leading researchers using various databases and professional networks.
  • Personally reach out to authors to solicit notable clinical trials and other research that would be of interest to JAMA.
  • Advise Editor in Chief and Executive Editors on content, features, and plans.

Staff management

  • Direct, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff and freelancers.

  • Responsible for setting objectives and evaluating staff performance; ensure staff development and identify opportunities for advancing staff skills and expertise.

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. MD degree required; other advanced degree, such as PhD, MPH, MSc desirable.
  2. Minimum 10+ years of experience in critically evaluating scientific research and clinical manuscripts required; and experience with the peer review process and medical editing, such as associate editor, fellowship in medial journalism, or as an editorial board member is desirable.
  3. Track record of academic and scholarly accomplishments in one or more areas, including faculty experience, research experience, and scientific publication.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of research design, methods and statistics, and research reporting standards.
  5. Experience with audio and video content and programs, including an understanding of digital media landscape; ability to guide translation of medical, clinical, and research topics into multimedia content and programs; and ability to review and approve audio and video content for quality and accuracy.
  6. Experience leading, mentoring, and evaluating, developing, providing management oversight for staff.
  7. Excellent communication skills, including excellent writing skills, and effective presentation and public speaking skills.
  8. Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills required with ability to interface effectively with physicians, other clinicians, and researchers, to connect with them and promote JAMA.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment with minimal supervision as well as to be a strong individual contributor.
  10. Demonstrated high level of attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines and ability to work independently to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality editorial material.
  11. Some travel involved.
