DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society. Its diverse curricula facilitates creative thinking and prepares students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

Under the oversight of the Baskin School of Engineering Dean, the Westside Research Park (WRP) located on 2300 Delaware Avenue about 2.5 miles from the main campus, is transforming into an important interdisciplinary research campus. Constructed in 1980 and acquired in 2004, the WRP comprises 18.5 acres and two buildings with about 243,000 GSF for academic and administrative offices and research laboratories with complex infrastructure, utilities and equipment. Current occupants include faculty, researchers, staff and graduate students in Materials Sciences (PB Sci Division); the Genomics Institute, Robotics, Smart Power (Baskin Engineering); the Center for Force Majeure (Arts), and Admissions (Undergraduate Education).

The WRP Facilities Manager is responsible for managing a wide range of building and site issues, problems and activities, including safety, access, maintenance, remodeling and construction activities, emergency and regulatory questions. The manager is the primary liaison for occupants as well as campus and external agencies and contractors. The manager collaborates with department and campus leadership on space planning and site development.

JOB SUMMARY

Implement and coordinate building management procedures and space planning activities, which require specialized consideration such as laboratories with special circumstances (e.g., special ventilation, or use of hazardous materials) or coordination of activities with multiple building occupants / departments. Facilitates and collaborates with management on the design and planning for space allocation. Applies extensive knowledge of organization buildings, infrastructure, policies and procedures. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments. May mentor and train peers and supporting staff members. Supervises two staff members.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $91,850 - $107,800/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

40% - FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

  • Applies advanced concepts in site management with multi-divisional occupants and external agencies regarding safety, access, maintenance, remodeling and construction activities. Analyzes unique issues and problems and recommends solutions.
  • Develops and implements building management procedures and recommends changes; ensures currency, relevance, and adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates building community committees, occupant database, and communications.
  • Manages facilities request online ticketing and tracking system.
  • Oversees physical access management.

30% - FACILITIES LIAISON

  • Coordinates with multiple units (e.g., Risk and Safety Services, Transportation, Physical Planning, etc.) throughout UCSC to provide a safe and secure facilities environment.
  • Works with internal and external agencies/contractors as needed in regards to existing contract terms or to solicit or negotiate contracts as well as public use of facilities.
  • Collaborates with department and campus leadership on the space planning development; evaluates and advises on the design and allocation.
  • Coordinates emergency repairs during and after work hours.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for outreach to and communication with building neighbors to advise of activities that may affect those entities.

20% - SPACE PLANNING

  • Works with occupants, campus and external agencies to plan space that accommodates non-routine systems and/or research or specialized equipment, and hazardous materials storage and disposal.
  • Provides planning and coordination for construction and alteration of projects on a continuing basis.
  • Develops budgets for management review to include moves with significant building infrastructure upgrades.

10% - SUPERVISION

  • Sets work schedules, project priorities; trains and supervises staff. Monitors performance of staff members, provides feedback and completes performance evaluations on an annual basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge in the areas of building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, organization and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Advanced skill in space planning.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to identify and resolve problems.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Advanced oral communication skills.
  • Advanced written communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in influencing others.
  • Experience with supervising and leading staff.
  • Advanced skills with project management with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage short-long term tasks and projects.
  • Advanced skills to assess processes or services to make improvements.
  • Experience with identifying management and physical security and access systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in negotiation and management of service contracts.
  • Experience in community relations and stakeholder communication.
  • Knowledge of UCSC procurement policies and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of architectural or engineering concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill regarding specialized research needs in space planning and advanced skill to effectively translate needs to professional architects and engineers.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
