About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly own a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.

Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) seeks an experienced Engineer with background in computational science/mechanics/engineering in the areas of nonlinear solid mechanics, micromechanics, damage mechanics, and fracture mechanics. The position involves developing capabilities for finite element modeling of nuclear fuel system structural performance including the initiation and propagation of damage and fracture in extreme conditions. The desired modeling capabilities involve failure analyses influenced by microstructure using complex material models, such as creep and viscoplasticity. The position will involve conceiving of, developing, and applying computational failure models through commercial or open source software to a wide range of technical engineering problems. Work assignments will include designing, implementing, testing, verifying, maintaining engineering software within modern computing architecture, and working with structural and materials engineers to deploy the new technologies into engineering applications. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively to identify and solve engineering problems and will require interactions across application developers, engineering users, and system administrators.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or;
  • PhD degree in engineering or science related field from an accredited college or university

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in software design and development workflows and utilities (e.g. unit testing, continuous integration, version control, debugging, profiling, compiler operation/optimization.
  • Experience with software development including both compiled (e.g. C, C++, FORTRAN) and interpreted (e.g. Python) scientific computing languages and the use of modules.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments and Linux OS.
  • Implementation of material behavior models such as creep, crystal plasticity, and other material behavior models.
  • Domain knowledge of solid mechanics.
  • Experience with developing and implementation of computational failure methods including fracture and damage modeling.
