Pay Range Information
Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.
Position Summary Information


Job Description Summary
Assist student teams as they research an assigned issue, composes and refine a written brief, and polish its oral presentation through numerous practice rounds judged by faculty and fellow Board members. Assist in preparing the teams to represent their school in regional and national competitions.
The Mock Trial, Moot Court and Alternative Resolution Boards represent the Fowler School of Law at various mock trial competitions.
Responsibilities
Appellate Moot Court

  • Assist Professor Schultz in preparing the Appellate Moot Court Board as they represent the Fowler School of Law at various mock trial competitions.
  • Advise an elite group of students on drafting successful briefs and oral presentations for regional and national competitions.
  • Guide teams if needed as they research an assigned issue, composes and refines a written brief, and polishes its oral presentation through numerous practice rounds judged by faculty and fellow Board members.


Mock Trial Team Prep

  • Guide student teams of three or four members as they prepare and argue a case in an actual courtroom, with members of the bench and bar serving as judges.
  • Evaluate their opening statements and closing arguments;
  • Assess their courtroom mannerisms as they conduct direct and cross-examination of witnesses;
  • Assess if they are raising evidentiary objections when appropriate;

Alternative Dispute Resolution
Guide student teams as they prepare for competition focusing on:

  • "real-life" experience in the practice of law in a controlled environment
  • development of important skills that they will use as practitioners
  • ability to deal with clients' non-legal goals as well as their legal concerns
  • Provide feedback on the students efforts in placing the client at ease, as well as probe the client for relevant details.
  • Assess if the team provided or gave any false hope, violated any ethical duties of an attorney, or gave inaccurate advice.
  • Provide guidance on error corrections.
  • Provide feedback on presentation style and delivery.
  • Networking

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Alumni of FSOL
  • Must have participated on either the Moot Court, Mock Trial, or Alternative Dispute Resolution Board while at FSOL
  • Currently be practicing either as a District Attorney or civil litigator.
  • Ability to provide direct feedback
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel
