Sr System Administrator II

The Sr System Administrator II supports business solutions. The purpose of this role is to develop business software solutions for complex and large scale projects through object and data modeling, database design, programming, quality assurance, and implementation support. The Sr System Administrator II participates in application standards development and serves as an evangelist for best practices.

The Lead Business Systems Administrator is responsible for ensuring production environment availability, stability and performance of 3rd party software applications and servers (such as Hyperion, Cognos, Tableau, other similar platforms). This role serves as the IT point person, system advocate, and subject matter expert for such applications and provides day-to-day close support to internal business partners. In addition, provides team with technical guidance and day-to-day task assignments.

Key Areas of Responsibility



  • Perform all stages of the software development life cycle, self-manage activities on smaller projects and serve as technical lead on small, medium and large projects.
  • Determine operating requirements, costs, as well as resource needs for assigned projects and work in conjunction with a project manager on initiatives.
  • Co-lead with Project Manager employing object-oriented analysis and design techniques including use case analysis, object modeling, and database schema design to ensure business requirements and design goals are met.
  • Lead / develop: High-level system narratives, storyboards, and user interface prototypes;
  • Lead / develop: Detailed design specifications for hardware and software use by the technical team;
  • Lead / develop: System test plans, ensure software quality assurance (SQA) standards are achieved, and validate that business goals are accomplished;
  • Lead / develop: Detailed estimates for projects, including resource allocation, timelines, and budget.
  • Develop applications to CDW coding standards and quality.
  • Identify issues that require more attention, and work to resolve issues based on an understanding of the business problem being solved.
  • Make technical decisions to meet the design goals laid out in product road map and by management.
  • Coach, mentor and monitor progress of jr. members.
  • Draw appropriate resources together in order to address technical issues.
  • Direct and focus the efforts of the technical project team.
  • Complete projects/tasks on a timely basis, according to commitments made to stakeholders and management.
  • Report project/task status to the management.
  • Other Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with business and project teams to gather requirements and business needs.
  • Make technical decisions to meet the design goals laid out in product road map and by management.
  • Provide in depth leadership in the analysis and resolution of business needs related to packaged software.
  • Ensure production environment availability, stability and performance through proactive monitoring, configuration and tuning.
  • Serve as the IT point person, system advocate and SME for 3rd party software applications with a strong customer-service oriented disposition toward internal business partners.
  • Establish and maintain a strong, close working relationship with functional area counterparts, users, internal IT, external consultants, and product vendors.
  • Perform software installations, system configurations, migrations, maintenance, upgrades, patches/fixes of 3rd party package software.
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware and infrastructure issues; marshal all necessary resources (developers, infrastructure team, Help Desk, coworkers, etc.) and collaborate to resolve including escalation with vendor.
  • Partner with management to plan and coordinate IT activities with all users/stakeholders.
  • Provide regular status and report on issues that arise to management.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders when problems exist and follow-up once resolved.
  • Create and maintain system documentation; train other administrators.
  • Develop and promote standard operating procedures, best practices, governance.
  • Establish and perform backup/disaster recovery procedures.
  • Assist and advise management with setting vision and strategy.
  • In pursuit of all the above, provides team with technical guidance and day-to-day task assignments.
  • In alignment with business needs, design and manage system security plans and procedures; maintain user groups, roles, rights/permissions; perform security audits.
  • Perform technical infrastructure/hardware requirements gathering, sizing, installation, testing with the IT systems engineering/networking groups.
  • Remain current on the latest software releases/release notes in anticipation of future business needs and/or to improve productivity and departmental capabilities.
  • Keep abreast of related technologies, methodologies, best practices and provide recommendations for adoption/implementation Proactively identify opportunities for improvement and take necessary actions to implement.
  • Evaluate packaged software products and upgrades to existing products. Analyze and resolve business needs related to packaged software.


Education and/or Experience Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years application development experience, or 7 years CDW Application Development experience.

  • Expertise in developing applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others.
  • Expert knowledge of 3rd party packaged software and in depth expert knowledge of PC hardware and software.
  • Advanced knowledge of object-oriented design, and programming techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and maintain productive working relationships cross-departmentally and cross-functionally.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with and present to all stakeholders including senior leadership.
  • Strong organizational, planning and creative problem solving-skills with critical attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated success of facilitation and solutions implementation.
  • Proven track record of leading application development projects.
  • History of balancing competing priorities with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the business while meeting deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Masters Degree in relevant field.
  • Administration experience with Hyperion, Cognos, Tableau, other similar platforms
  • Strong working knowledge from a technical (non-functional)/administrative perspective of Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management solutions including Planning, Essbase, Profitability and Cost Management (HPCM), Financial Data Management (FDMEE), Financial Reporting, Smartview, etc. and the ability quickly learn and master others
  • Experience with Essbase calc scripts, load rules, business rules, report scripts
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, MDX/MAXL, SSIS
  • Experience developing and running data extraction, transformation, load jobs using Hyperion as both source and target
  • Familiarity with financial functional area (especially FP&A)
