Associate Director, Health Policy External Affairs - Remote

The Associate Director, Health Policy, will support UnitedHealth Group efforts to advance policy solutions across health care benefits, care delivery, and data and technology issues by developing and coordinating research, thought leadership, and strategies to advance UnitedHealth Group's mission. The Associate Director, Health Policy is a policy expert and strategic thinker with knowledge of government health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid and how policy developments in the area of data privacy, governance, and technologies (such as artificial intelligence and machine learning) affect such programs.

Primary Responsibilities:




  • Track and analyze federal and state legislation, regulations, and policy developments in the area of data privacy, governance, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
  • Track and report on Congressional hearings and relevant agency and stakeholder meetings.
  • Research policy topics to discern environmental trends and support priority internal initiatives.
  • Draft official correspondence, thought leadership collateral, presentations, policy updates, and other materials for external and internal efforts.
  • Support creation of advocacy materials and partner with colleagues to develop strategies and materials to drive policy change.
  • Identify impactful business threats or opportunities to Optum and UnitedHealthcare.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in across business functions to ensure coordinated engagement on health policy issues and effectively ensure consistency of messaging.
  • Engage with policy thought leaders and coalitions for proactive positioning around our key priorities.
  • Participate in internal working groups, including deployment of comprehensive strategies and tactics, to achieve UnitedHealth Group's policy and advocacy priorities.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8+ years of experience in health care policy
  • Experience monitoring, analyzing, and synthesizing state and/or federal legislation impacting data privacy, governance and technologies
  • Proven understanding through experience of how legislation impacts business goals and ability to articulate these impacts
  • Industry-wide perspective across the health care sector
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to build rapport and trust and an affinity for collaborative work
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and programs to senior executives
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to gather, assess, and synthesize information from various sources
  • Advanced organizational skills and the ability to manage work on multiple simultaneously
  • Ability to anticipate needs and foresee and overcome obstacles



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Health Policy, Public Administration, Law, Medicine and/or related work

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City, or Washington residents is $101,200 to $184,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
