Position Summary:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Financial Clearance, this position will be responsible for processing all administrative and financial components of financial clearance for multiple specialties, ability to escalate requests in a timely manner and triage complex cases. In addition, this role is able to work independently independent of supervision is knowledgeable of financial clearance functions, can problem solve functional level issues, and is able to provide input from an operational perspective on decision-making. The Senior Financial Clearance Specialist must have the ability to cross train staff to perform duties include managing by service line, and/or complex multi-payer insurance verification and benefit eligibility validation and prior authorizations, including obtaining and completing documentation for pre-certification and referrals/authorizations.

This position also requires operating knowledge of Johns Hopkins Medicine payer contracts and payer regulatory requirements. Must be highly proficient with the insurance verification/benefit eligibility process, have extensive knowledge of pre-certification, claims processing, and billing. This position also requires integral communication with patients, insurance companies, department administrators, physicians, and other departmental staff to ensure the ideal patient experience across Johns Hopkins Medicine. This position may act in a quasi-supervisory capacity which may require other duties as needed.

Supports the success of a high-performing shared services organization by helping to champion and drive the long-term Johns Hopkins Medicine Shared Services vision. Helps foster an environment in which continuous improvement in business processes and services is welcomed and recognized.

Education:

Requires minimum of Associates degree. Work experience may substitute degree (i.e. 2 years of experience for 1 year of education)

Work Experience:

Minimum 5-7 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle, medical office, hospital, patient access or related experience

Licensure/Certification:

  • Certification on appropriate registration system is required during the 90-day introductory period
  • Successful completion of departmental training program and all related competency assessments
  • Coding Certification is a plus

    Knowledge/Skills:
    • Advanced in Microsoft Office
    • Requires excellent verbal, communication, telephone etiquette, interviewing, and interpersonal skills to interact with peers, superiors, patients, members of the healthcare team and external agencies
    • Effectively maintains leadership in group environment and promotes teamwork
    • Excellent time management skills
    • Requires high level of professionalism in both appearance and presentation
    • Ability to utilize multiple modes of communication (e.g. phone, fax, patient portal, e-mail, physician portal, mail, etc.) in a professional, accurate, efficient, and courteous manner
    • Demonstrated ability to work in multiple computer systems, such as patient registration/accounting systems, document imaging, scanning, payment posting, proprietary payer websites and data quality monitoring, both accurately and efficiently
    • Strong data entry skills required
    • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Johns Hopkins Medicine
    • Accuracy and attentiveness to detail required
    • Must be able to set and organize own work priorities, and adapt to change
    • Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles
    • Ability to meet or exceed targeted customer service, productivity, and quality standards
    • Requires the ability to work with and maintain confidential information
    • Ability to perform with accuracy and attention to detail for meeting payer-imposed deadlines on a daily basis
