Adapted Curriculum Special Education Assistant/Associate Professor (Term or Tenure-line)

The George Mason University, College of Education and Human Development ( CEHD), invites applications for a new, full-time term (non-tenure track) or tenure-line assistant/associate instructional faculty position in the Division of Special Education and Disability Research for the Students with Disabilities who Access the Adapted Curriculum (i.e., low incidence/severe disabilities) program to begin Fall 2023. The Adapted Curriculum program at GMU is a state-approved initial licensure program and provides coursework at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching adapted curriculum undergraduate and graduate courses during the day and in the evening via both face-to-face and distance; supervising graduate and undergraduate internships and field placements; participating in curriculum development, program planning, and accreditation activities to enhance the student learning experience; and engaging with faculty and staff colleagues to advance program initiatives, supporting adjunct faculty, and participating in service at the division and college level.

Candidates may be considered for either a term (non-tenure track) position or a tenure-line position depending on the candidate's specific configuration of credentials and talents. Tenure-line faculty are expected to maintain an active line of research and external funding, and provide expertise and scholarly leadership in severe disabilities, with an emphasis on bridging research and practice. Teaching-oriented term faculty will focus on teaching assignments and essential service responsibilities while also supporting relevant grant activities. The teaching load for a non-tenure track position will be a 4-course equivalent (12 credits) in both the fall and spring semesters. A tenure-line position may be considered with a 2-course equivalent (6 credits) in both the fall and spring semesters. Both position types allow the option to add courses under separate contract for the summer.

Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in Special Education from an accredited institution with a dissertation emphasis applicable to students with severe disabilities. A minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience in severe disabilities is required. Applicants are required to have held a valid, fully credentialed teaching license in special education, with experience in low incidence/severe disabilities. Successful higher education teaching experience is required. The successful candidate must also establish instructional versatility specific to students with severe disabilities across the program in such areas as characteristics, teaching methods and curriculum, assessment, reading and writing, transition, communication, behavior, collaborative teamwork, and positioning and handling with demonstrated knowledge and experience. Consideration for a tenure-line position requires a publication record and portfolio of external funding consistent with the academic rank and tenure status for which the candidate is being considered; and alignment with the college's core values focused on diversity, collaboration, and innovation.

Preferred qualifications include demonstrated excellence in writing, communication, presentation, and public speaking skills. Demonstrated teaching experience in online venues and/or experience in teacher supervision and/or mentorship is also preferred.
