Who We Are

Located in the heart of Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA. With a population of just over 53,000, Harrisonburg is one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Department of Philosophy & Religion is seeking part-time instructors to deliver introductory philosophy and religion courses including Philosophy 101: Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy 120: Critical Thinking, Philosophy 150: Ethical Reasoning, Religion 101: Religions of the World, and Religion 102: Religion, Spirituality and the Meaning of Life. These courses serve the university's general education program and draw undergraduates into our major and minor programs.

Instructors will deliver courses in person on the campus of James Madison University. Available sections to teach during fall and spring semesters will vary based on enrollment needs, and instructor pay will be based on enrollment numbers. The academic semester begins two weeks prior to the first day of classes each semester and ends two weeks following the end of classes each semester. Duties are for the academic semester and include course preparation, lecturing, leading discussion, grading and holding weekly office hours.

At least a master's degree in either Philosophy or Religion is required.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

Notice of Availability - Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
