Chief Philanthropy Officer - Providence St. Mary Medical Center

This position serves as the Chief Philanthropy Office for Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, CA with direct accountability for cultivating relationships and generating financial resources in support of key system initiatives, including clinical institutes and major priorities. The leader also provides oversight to affiliated fundraising foundations, supporting regional and local leadership in goal setting, optimization, expert-to-expert collaboration, communications strategies, financial reporting, and performance monitoring. The executive provides direct leadership to Apple Valley foundation. The position provides significant direction in building the Foundations' brand in the communities we serve, and beyond, as well as building the culture of philanthropy throughout the area. Additionally, the leader advances the hospital's strategic plan for philanthropy - engaging leaders, governance groups, caregivers, and donors at all levels.

As the leader of philanthropic activities, the leader will advance key strategies that impact the entire organization. This includes developing philanthropic support for clinical institutes, driving multi-market fundraising strategies, advancing corporate partnership programs, securing grant support for research and other programs, and cultivating lasting relationships with major donors/investors. The leader will also drive higher levels of training, expert-to-expert sharing, communication and marketing initiatives, financial reporting, and shared governance strategies.

The Chief Philanthropy Officer will actively engage senior leadership, board members, and other key stakeholders in the fundraising process. The leader is also responsible for designing and implementing policies and programs that will produce increasing levels of support for our regional and local programs and initiatives. Additionally, the executive will serve as a strategic partner to leaders around key initiatives, including research, clinical institutes, and major capital campaigns.

The Chief Philanthropy Officer will be responsible for:



  • Providing overall leadership and coordination of philanthropy activities, galvanizing support from executives, board members, clinical leaders, caregivers, and community leaders.
  • Defining the strategic imperative and key tactics related to philanthropy that align with the core ministry and division strategy, addressing the needs of the poor and vulnerable in alignment with the Mission, and generating essential revenue to grow our Ministries. This position is sensitive to and supports the importance of regional and local foundations and their fundraising goals and priorities.
  • Developing and defining goals and objectives for fundraising at the system level.
  • Coordinating goals at regional and local levels in concert with ISFP planning. The leader implements campaigns, development techniques and department policies to achieve goals for the foundation.
  • Working with leaders across the ministry and division to develop and maintain standardized systems and processes for prospect development, data analytics, portfolio management, financial reporting, performance metrics, gift processing and more.
  • Providing direct support to all foundations including, contracting, CRM, technical support and training, digital platforms, grateful patient programs and vendor management.
  • Operationalizing an effective grants team to support clinical and social research and program development endeavors across the system.
  • Ensuring compliance and reporting requirements are met or exceeded, while providing responsive service levels.
  • Designing, advancing, and coordinating a robust corporate partnerships program, linking institutional and corporate partners with key initiatives, including clinical institutes, clinical programs, international health, and community investment.
  • Assuring that all fundraising activities achieve established organizational performance and outcome goals.
  • Providing leadership to Providence St. Mary foundation, ensuring effective board recruitment and participation, responsible investments, and fundraising goals are achieved without diminishing regional and local fundraising efforts.
  • Ensuring alignment between community investment and philanthropy practices.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


Required qualifications/experience for this position include:



  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience, much of it leading a diverse staff, including management in all aspects of principal, major, planned, annual, capital, endowment, and event fundraising programs, preferably in a complex hospital system, academic medical center hospital, or children's hospital setting.
  • Proven record of successfully increasing a fundraising organization's performance, including execution of successful capital campaigns. This includes personal success at cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of principal gift prospects and donors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), require building trust, gain respect, and develop meaningful relationships with donors and prospects, board members, administrators, volunteers, physicians, other caregivers, and foundation staff.
  • Unique capability as a team leader to attract, develop, and retain a cohesive and exceptionally high-caliber team, which when coupled with the appropriate organizational structure and operating systems, maximizes the effectiveness of raising money across the Southern California region.
  • Analytical and organizational skills required to evaluate existing programs, conceive, and implement new programs/strategies, as well as resolve complex and/or sensitive operational and interpersonal issues.
  • Proven success at working within complex integrated organizations to achieve internal consensus about the importance of philanthropy, resulting in collaborative efforts at fundraising.
  • Project management experience or the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and group facilitation skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to compile and disseminate diverse information.
