Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
August 11, 2023

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for an Electronics Engineering Technologist (Fabrication & Installation) to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will perform complex technical support in the field of electronics fabrication and installation in an accelerator environment. You will layout, fabricate and install a broad variety of general electronics hardware, including chassis fabrication, wiring, cabling, printed circuit board loading and equipment installation. The Electronics Engineering Technologist (Fabrication & Installation) will perform measurements and calculations necessary to achieve desired results. This position will be assigned to an Engineering Installation & Fabrication Shop.

What You Will Do:

  • Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation cross-connect/interconnect cabling systems.
  • Operate hand, power and machine tools of the trade.
  • Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams.
  • Follow generalized written or verbal instructions. Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade.
  • Interact with engineers, designers and electronics coordinators on matters relating to finished product design, technical performance and documentation criteria. Provide input to cost estimates and production/installation scheduling.

Level 2

Level 3

  • Provide broad and general program/project directions to fabricate complex and highly specialized electronics apparatus that require advanced technical knowledge and expertise in manufacturing methods, tooling and equipment usage, circuit analysis, non-standard packaging, enclosures, as well as component and material selection.
  • Install accelerator oriented large control, instrumentation and communication systems, which require thorough understanding and application of accelerator system integration principles.
  • In collaboration with engineers, designers, and electronics coordinators, design and develop complex printed prototype models for production which emphasize ease/cost of manufacturing, access for maintenance and calibration, and cost/technical performance optimization.
  • Lead a technical support team and oversee users of a technical support facility. Give instructions on scope and objectives of assigned work. Evaluate quantity, quality, and job progress as required. Participate in personnel actions as required. Train and assist users of equipment on operation and safety.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Provide on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff on matters relating to design layout, fabrication and installation techniques and procedures, and quality and workmanship codes and standards.

What is Required:

Level 2
