DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Under close supervision, the Laboratory Research Assistant will: provide assistance with mouse experiments including treatment administration (oral, nasal, and injections), tissue isolation, and histology. Treatments will include assisting and working with biohazardous bacteria or viruses. The incumbent will also assist with tissue culture, western blot, RNA and DNA isolation, and ELISA using standard protocols.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Knowledge of cell culture and aseptic technique.

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Knowledge of molecular biology experience including RNA, DNA, protein, and ELISA.

  • Proficiency with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Also needed is knowledge with graphpad prism and softmouse software.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be comfortable and have at least two years of experience working with mice and/or rats.
  • Experience harvesting tissues from mice and/or other experimental animals.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing and able to work with mice, biohazardous material, including potentially infectious microorganisms.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,159 - $50,738 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.67 - $24.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
