Position Summary:
The position of Program Instructor (Hourly) of Language Arts for Middle and/or High school requires an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and/or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check.
The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July-Mid August). Fall and Spring Sessions are Monday thru Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8:00 am until 2:00pm and/or 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Note: Academic Year weekday school hours are adjusted as needed per school.
Summer Session is currently up to six (6) weeks, Monday thru Thursday, from 8:30am until 3:00 pm with occasional Saturday events.

Essential Functions:
A Program Instructor will
1. Provides relevant grade level academic classes to prepare students for success in high school and college.
2. Helps students to integrate reading and writing skills.
3. Develops students' communicative, study and time management skills and assists in the development of test taking strategies.
4. Helps students to build confidence in subject areas and helps develop student problem solving and critical thinking abilities.
5. Helps students develop English Language Arts skills in preparation for the state mandated tests, i.e., PARCC, PSAT, SAT/ACT. (Note: Actual tests may vary).
6. Attends all staff development and training sessions.
7. Submits typed lesson plans on time and in accordance with NJCB requirements.
8. Helps to develop and implement the NJGU/CB Curriculum based on the New Jersey Common Core Standards for the program.
9. Creates a learning environment that will facilitate the desire to learn and help students to gain self-motivation for self-improvement.
10. Maintains accurate academic records and files.
11. Assists in the administration, design, and evaluation of standardized diagnostic and placement tests.
12. Supervises Teacher Assistant/Tutor in the operation of all essential functions.
13. Participates in the planning and delivery of team-teaching and thematic lesson plans with other teachers in the same subject area and/or grade level.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
Certification for core subject areas of English Language Arts.
At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with minority and disadvantaged students is preferred.
