Job Description

Grace is seeking a Senior R&D Scientist to join our R&D, Specialty Catalysts team! This role reports to the R&D Manager located at our corporate headquarters in Columbia, MD.The SC business R&D group has an exciting opening in the Polyolefin Products group for a scientist that will provide R&D and customer service support to the GRACE catalyst innovation and UNIPOL PP licensing businesses.

The Specialty Catalyst (SC) business is a growth business of the W.R. GRACE Catalyst Technology division. The SC business offers highly specialized catalyst technology for polyolefins production and also offers the UNIPOL polypropylene (PP) process technology. The SC business has licensed about 70 world class UNIPOL PP plants around the world representing over 15 % of the total PP market.The SC business R&D group leads the industry with a team of highly specialized professionals in the areas of organic synthesis, catalyst support material science, heterogeneous catalyst development, polyolefin (PO) production process technology, PO products material science and analytical sciences.

Responsibilities

Customer Interaction

  • Interfaces directly with customers via technical presentations and meetings to facilitate polypropylene product troubleshooting and product development

Analytical Methods

  • Develops fundamental understanding of analytical techniques to accelerate catalyst innovation and support polyolefin material science
  • Develops and implements appropriate analytical techniques to support materials science and catalyst innovation

Polyolefins material science development for new catalyst platforms

  • Develops structure-property relationships for polyolefin products made with GRACE advanced catalysts systems
  • Participates in multi-functional teams to implement new catalyst developments at GRACE customers
  • Supports polyolefin products troubleshooting as required by GRACE clients

PP products developments

  • Connects product design parameters with application requirements to develop market leading polyolefin products based on GRACE advanced catalyst systems
  • Supports polyolefin products joint development efforts with key clients

Intellectual property

  • Uses best scientific practices to explore technology options and generate intellectual property that increase GRACE technical leadership in the marketplace
  • Writes scientific reports, invention disclosures and patents on polyolefin products that build on GRACE technical capability
  • Monitors competitive patents and develops strategies to oppose patents that threaten GRACE technical position

Technical leadership

  • Writes external papers that showcase GRACE technology leadership in catalysis and polyolefins products
  • Represents GRACE in specialized conferences.
Required Qualifications
  • BS degree in Chemistry or related field
  • 10+ years related technical experience OR MS Degree in Chemistry or related field with 5+ years of relevant industrial experience
  • Customer-facing experience - interfacing with customers via technical presentations and meetings
  • Understanding and experience with polymer product development including structure-properties relationships, additives, testing and applications
  • Downstream Polypropylene (PP) resin and product development experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Understanding of polyolefins product development including structure-properties relationships, additives, testing and applications
  • Ability to speak and write in Mandarin
