Job DescriptionScope of Position: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center?s mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient?s involvement in his/her own plan of care and reducing the length of hospitalization, The staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement , the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost effective care.Position Summary: The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his/her family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.Required QualificationsDegree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. Current Ohio license or interim permit. *Experience in relevant care setting preferred.

The PCC-RN will demonstrate core competencies in the area of customer service, teamwork, job knowledge, and resource management.

60% of time: Coordinates patient care team in providing and documenting patient care
Assesses patient needs and develops a plan of nursing care
Provides patient care according to patient needs; performs specialized nursing care procedures requiring professional licensure such as IV therapy, blood transfusions, telemetry monitoring, medication administration, etc.
Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors and other staff. Is courteous to others and promotes mutual respect.
Establishes patient education plan; provides patient education related to patients condition, therapeutic regimen and self care measures; evaluates effectiveness of patient education.
Provides discharge teaching according to patient need; coordinates admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
Demonstrates understanding of job responsibilities and uses appropriate knowledge and skills to effectively complete work.
Anticipates needs of customers and assumes responsibility for solving customer problems.
Manages team in delivering patient care in accordance with standards of practice.
Assumes coordinating role in emergency situations, including Code Blue procedures, implementing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and notifying physicians.
Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and own time and others time; systematically organizes and prioritizes work to maximize productivity and carry out orders within appropriate timeframes.
May assume charge nurse responsibilities.

25% of time: Serves as leader, and preceptor/facilitator of patient care team.
Works effectively as a team member and maintains a positive relationship and open communication with other team members. Interactions promote teamwork and resolution of conflict.
Prioritizes patient care needs; coordinates activities of team; delegates appropriate elements of care to members of the team.
Functions as a role model for the team; facilitates integration of new members in all roles into the team; effectively communicates and collaborates with all members of the team; interaction promotes teamwork.
Assesses learning needs of team members; plans and implements learning activities based on assessments.
Facilitates resolution of conflict within the team members.

10% of time: Manages/participates with team in quality assessment and improvement activities
Identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and organizational processes.
Demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest quality of service to all customers.
Adopts fiscally sound practices/responsibilities.
Contributes to performance improvement of the Hospital, the unit and the patient care team.
