Research Assistant
We are seeking a Research Assistant who will provide support for the research project to explore the feasibility of evaluating specific drug-sensitive and drug-resistant regimens in pregnant women from both the perspective of maternal and infant safety along with trial feasibility. We will review the safety of drug sensitive and drug-resistant TB drug and regimen candidates (e.g., RPT, MFX, Pa, BDQ, PZA, etc.) during all stages of pregnancy and lactation. This will be followed by a workshop to determine consensus on proposed research questions for drug-sensitive and drug resistant tuberculosis regimens to be evaluated in pregnant women (e.g., HPMZ, BPaLM, etc.). The final deliverable will be a report summarizing consensus on proposed research approach and candidate DS and DR-TB regimens for pregnant women.



The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Supporting, Mobilizing, and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) project. SMART4TB, a five-year $200 million cooperative agreement, to identify more effective methods and tools for finding, treating, and preventing tuberculosis (TB) in 24 priority countries for TB programming.

This initiative will build research capacity in high TB burden countries by supporting studies that evaluate novel approaches, interventions, and tools to combat TB including diagnostic tests, new treatment drugs and regimens, socioeconomic and health system challenges, methods to interrupt TB transmission, and TB vaccines readiness and delivery.

Led by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the SMART4TB international consortium partners are University of California, San Francisco, KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Treatment Action Group, Perinatal HIV Research Unit (South Africa), YR Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation (India), Walimu (Uganda), Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, and Victory Network (Vietnam).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform literature searches and summarize complex pre-clinical reproductive-toxicity studies.
  • Generate reports, charts, tables, and create presentations.
  • Assist with manuscript writing and grant proposal preparation.
  • Coordinate project tasks and timelines and maintain project calendar.
  • Communicate with partners and external colleagues and coordinate communications among project team members.
  • Schedule meetings.
  • Create meeting agendas and take minutes and disseminate meeting notes.
  • Review recorded meetings and pull out procedures keeping records of these procedures.
  • Prepare agendas and materials and ensure faculty leads, partners and regional hubs are fully prepared for meetings by proactively compiling research on meeting content, agendas, and subject matters as needed.
  • Take minutes for all TA2 meetings, capture action items, and transcript for all meetings and ensure information is documented within the ConfluenceTM team workspace.
  • Work with JHU colleagues across the SMART4TB project to share or obtain information as needed.
  • Participate in data collection activities, writing and editing research reports, articles, conference presentations, and other project-related products.
  • Responsible for cleaning data, creating data tables, coding open-ended survey responses, updating the text of reports following a pre-existing format, and proofreading reports.
  • Assist with other administrative duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters-level health professions degree or Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with Institutional Review Boards.
  • Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software AtlasTi.
  • Experience with Cloud platforms such as Zoom or Teams for purposes of conducting meetings and other related business functions.
  • Analytical skills such as experience examining data.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
