Job Summary

The City of Kirkland Parks and Community Service's Division is hiring a Leadperson for our Ballfields & Events crew. The Lead schedules daily field activities of crews while performing operation, maintenance, and construction activities in Kirkland's parks, athletic fields, and cemetery.

This is a full-time position, generally working Monday - Friday 5:30am to 2:00pm in both field and office settings. Candidates should have demonstrated knowledge and experience in parks maintenance, crew leadership, and athletic field management.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Parks Supervisor, the Lead assists in scheduling the daily field activities of crews while performing operations, maintenance, and construction of parks and public grounds.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Oversees field crews while performing park operations, maintenance, and construction activities.

2. Leads the following positions:

Senior Maintenance Person: Responsible for operating all equipment and performing manual labor.

Groundskeeper: Responsible for operating "light" equipment, hand, and power tools, and performing manual labor.

Seasonal Laborer: Performs manual labor and operates tools and equipment under close supervision.

3. Operates all park equipment and machinery.

4. Responsible for field crew training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The Lead may be assigned responsibilities in operations, maintenance, or construction categories. Depending on that particular assignment, representative duties are as follows:

1. Responsible to monitor and maintain inventory of parts and supplies on the job site and ensure crews have adequate hand and power tools and equipment to perform the work.

2. Coordinates, on the work site, work of assigned crew.

3. Maintains current knowledge of rules and regulations regarding operations, safety, maintenance, and construction of park facilities and is responsible to ensure compliance to these rules.

4. Resolves citizen complaints including follow-up investigation and research.

5. Trains less experienced employees in both equipment operation and operator safety.

6. Plans, implements, and maintains Operations and Maintenance Division field crew training program.

7. Evaluates and prioritizes situations/work requests.

8. Utilize City work management system, currently Lucity, to track materials, hours, and equipment used for assigned crew.

9. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

10. May be required to return to the city during off hours in case of emergency.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

1. Acts as Parks Supervisor in that person's absence.

2. Monitors work performance goals and standards of field crews as established by the Supervisor.

3. Provides input to the Park Supervisor for field crew performance evaluation.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to coordinate field operations and crew responsibilities.

2. Ability to identify and correct safety concerns.

3. Ability to operate equipment associated with park operations and be able to train less-experienced workers in the operation of said equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

4. Ability to operate basic hand power tools.

5. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

6. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.

7. Ability to work independently.

8. Ability to lead and evaluate crew field performance.


Qualifications

Must have high school diploma or GED. Must have a valid Washington Driver's License with current C.D.L. Class A with air endorsements or must obtain within one year of date of hire. Must have four years park maintenance and operations experience or equivalent.


Other

Working Conditions:
1. Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.

2. Must be willing and able to climb in and out of trenches, excavation, and construction equipment. Also, will work at heights and on ladders.

3. This position may be responsible for weekend and/or evening shifts as part of the normal work week.
