Overall Purpose:

Duquesne Light is looking for a talented and motivated SQL database administrator to join our team. The candidate will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, diagnosis, and performance tuning of critical SQL Server database systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance of our corporate applications. This is a "hands-on" position requiring solid technical skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for triaging and optimizing application and platform related performance issues. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring database systems and services are certified for operational readiness (desired state configuration, security, health, and performance). The candidate must be a subject matter expert on SQL and must be able to lead applications and projects independently.

Job Responsibilities:



  • Install, administer, and maintain SQL Server instances.
  • Audit, evaluate and understand existing stored procedures and database scripts to support the application and ongoing enhancements
  • Provide Tier 2 support for SQL incidents.
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security
  • Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end
  • Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes
  • Ensure all scheduled jobs such as backups, ETL loads, and other items have executed correctly
  • Interact and communicate with the IT Service Desk and IT groups to provide customer service and communicate resolutions strategies and procedures.
  • Support projects by attending project meetings, gathering, and identifying database requirements, assisting to plan and implement SQL infrastructure required and communicating status updates both written and verbal.
  • Participate in On-Call rotation

Does not supervise others.

Education/Experience:



  • Associate degree or higher in Computer Science or Information Systems; OR an equivalent combination of job-related education/experience
  • Three (3) years related experience
  • Strong foundation in the creation and maintenance of SQL Server database objects such as tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and functions.
  • Experience with SQL Server security at the server and database level.
  • Experience with native Backup and recovery techniques.
  • Experience with Windows and SQL Server Fail-over Clusters.
  • SQL DBA Certifications (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as solid interpersonal skills.
  • Effective project management, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with SSAS, SSIS, and SSRS
  • Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
  • Flexible, team player, "get-it-done" personality
  • Hands-on experience with performance tuning



Scope

Primary focus is on daily deliverables, outputs and reporting. Typically accountable for managing one's own time and work flow. Responsible for using prescribed guidelines to analyze situations and solve problems. Work activities are typically moderate to complex in nature requiring the incumbent to draw on previous knowledge to perform role. Continues to build knowledge base but has a solid foundation to act independently the majority of the time. Still draws on experts and managers when needed but less frequently.

Problems and issues faced are vague. Draws on past experience on a regular basis. Accountable for direct level of reasoning and decision making.

  • Occasionally on-site - primarily remote and report to the office for company and department reasons only
  • Work is mostly location independent
  • Requirements for on-site presence are largely driven by Company requirements that need to be done in person, example All-Employee Meetings and Performance Reviews.
