Description:

The Informatics Analyst will perform a variety of data collection, data management, and technical development work within the project portfolio of Duke AI Health. This position reports to the Associate Director of Informatics and has strong ties in a matrixed management structure with the Duke Health Technology Solutions Analytic Center of Excellence. The Informatics Analyst will design and maintain programs and datasets for a variety of disciplines across Duke in support of research, quality improvement and operations projects. The mission of AI Health is to connect, strengthen, amplify, and grow multiple streams of theoretical and applied research on artificial intelligence and machine learning at the University in order to answer the most urgent and difficult challenges in medicine and population health.

Responsibilities:

Data Design, Development, Validation



  • Provide data management support, including development and validation of custom data extractions from data sources appropriate to clinical and statistical requirements
  • Develop utilities to perform data integration and cleaning tasks, including mapping data to project specifications, verification of external data to internal files, identifying data quality problems, and reporting/documenting local data nuances
  • Perform descriptive analysis on and manage large volume healthcare datasets
  • Ensure semantics and context of data is maintained during collection, processing and reporting
  • Work with the research team to ensure the highest quality data and utilities are produced and to ensure project needs are met in a timely manner
  • Work with investigators, project statisticians and analysts to understand analysis needs and create high quality analytic datasets
  • Work with analysts, project leaders, and technical leads in communicating status and escalating issues appropriately, including troubleshooting and operational issues as they arise
  • Document data usage requirements, research question goals, design of analysis data sets, and the demarcation of analysis scope
  • Work iteratively with researchers to investigate the ability and appropriateness of the source data to address their needs



Data Research Support and Presentation



  • Participate in design and scope of work for new business development, including feasibility assessments and recommendations
  • Specify and develop data characterization profiles and corresponding visualizations
  • Create ad hoc SQL scripts to analyze data and respond to data-related questions as appropriate
  • Produce data flow diagrams that can show data lineage and governance
  • Describe and present data findings to both clinical and technical customers



Implement industry trend solutions and develop expert informatics knowledge



  • Maintain a working knowledge of biomedical informatics, including technology, standards, systems and methodologies used in health care and related research, such as ICD, CPT, RXNorm, etc
  • Maintain familiarity with applicable regulations and guidance, especially relating to IRB processes
  • Maintain best practices in data security, data governance, testing, code management, documentation, and dictionary and metadata management
  • Collaborate with others performing similar work
  • Learn, apply and share new techniques to increase efficiencies; particularly in the areas of clinical research informatics and health services data concepts, applications and tools



Contribute to Mission of AI Health and Health Data Science within the SoM



  • Attend and contribute to AI Health and SOM meetings on a regular basis
  • Support AI Health leadership in the development of the center's mission, vision, strategy, and goals
  • Participate in the development of new opportunities and horizons
  • Evolving responsibilities, based upon needs of AI Health and the larger institution



Required Skills and Experience:



  • Proven experience and knowledge in developing complex SQL scripts
  • Strong relational database programming skills, including experience with developing tables, views, stored procedures, and functions
  • Experience in an enterprise relational database management system, particularly Oracle and/or SQL Server
  • Experience with testing and Quality Assurance (QA)
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and other relevant privacy regulations
  • Proven ability to work directly with customers and ensure the highest quality data is produced in a timely manner
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent problem solving skills and analytic judgement
  • Flexibility and adaptability, especially in working with a large and disbursed team



Preferred Skills and Experience:



  • Experience with clinical data, clinical research and electronic health records preferred
  • Experience with broader biomedical informatics practices including medical computing, terminology (ICD9, CPT, etc) and healthcare processes
  • Experience using data profiling methods to analyze data sources
  • Experience in systems design and/or refactoring
  • Experience with BI reporting a plus



Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, mathematics or a computer-related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.

Licensure/Certification:

If not achieved prior to employment, certification in indicated Epic data model(s) and module(s) is required within 6 months of employment except where otherwise negotiated; certification in an indicated Epic model is a condition of employment.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 2 years' experience in database programming in a clinical environment.
