Occupational Summary

The Duke Molecular Physiology Institute (DMPI), a part of Duke University Medical Center, occupies a place of national and international leadership in the fight against major diseases. Our mission is to produce integrated multi-omics and physiologic profiles of chronic human diseases, and to use such profiles to develop new disease detection strategies, novel therapies, and insights into disease mechanisms. A full-time clinical Exercise Physiologist is needed to join a DMPI study team conducting human subject clinical research at the Duke Center for Living campus. This Clinical Translation Research Division within the DMPI conducts multiple federal and industry funded projects involving healthy individuals, individuals with Type 2 diabetes those at risk for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases, as well as other clinical conditions.

Work Performed

This position will work closely with PIs and other members of a well-established clinical research team to support ongoing physiological studies involving muscle and fat biopsies, serial blood sampling, body composition analysis, strength assessments, cardiorespiratory fitness evaluations, and supervised exercise interventions.

This position will develop, coordinate, and implement exercise related programs for clinical research trials. This position will supervise exercise training sessions, conduct diagnostic testing, assist with research protocols, complete data acquisition and documentation, develop exercise programs for research participants, and monitor progress of participants in the performance of prescribed exercise regimens to include personal motivation as well as assessment of participants' tolerance of exercise program.

Required Qualifications at this Level




Education/Training:



Work requires a master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, or related field.






Experience:



None required beyond Education/Training requirement.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE






Preferred Skills:



Mandatory current CPR/AED training. Certification through ACSM CES or ACSM RCEP is preferred. The ideal candidate will have strong 12-lead ECG interpretation skills required for conducting maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing without direct supervision as well as previous experience in cardiac rehabilitation, health risk appraisal, comprehensive fitness testing, exercise prescriptions, working in a clinical environment, interacting with older adults and other special populations, and a desire for helping others achieve their health/wellness goals. This individual must have the ability to recognize symptom changes or signs of problems to activate the appropriate medical response and processes. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
