DUMAC Inc, the investment arm of Duke University, is seeking an experienced and intellectually curious investor to join the Private Investments team as an Investment Manager. Private Investments is a small, collaborative team with responsibility for the management of a multi-billion dollar portfolio of direct investments across private equity, venture capital, natural resources, and real estate. As a senior member of this team, the Investment Manager will work closely with other team members and the Chief Investment Officer to refine and implement investment ideas, research investment opportunities, conduct due diligence on prospective investment funds and direct opportunities, and lead in the continued development of a best-in-class investment office.

The position is in-person and is based in our offices in downtown Durham, North Carolina.

Work Performed

The Investment Manager will play a key role in sourcing, assessing, and recommending investment opportunities in investment fund managers across private asset classes, in addition to collaborating within areas such as portfolio construction and stakeholder communication.

Key aspects of this role include the following:




  • Develop and maintain a pipeline of investment opportunities in fund managers across private equity, venture capital, natural resources, and real estate
  • Lead meetings and calls with existing and prospective investment fund managers
  • Lead thorough due diligence on compelling potential opportunities, including qualitative and quantitative analysis of fund strategy, approach, investment process, organization, underlying positions detail, and historical performance
  • Prepare and present recommendations to the Chief Investment Officer and Private Investments team regarding opportunities with both new and existing investment fund managers
  • Monitor the performance, underlying positions, significant events, and organizational changes of existing fund managers
  • Monitor the broad capital market environment and evaluate DUMAC's ongoing investment fund manager array in relation to broader forces
  • Help maintain the investments-related database
  • Prepare and present regular reports on Private Investments sub-portfolio positioning, performance, and strategy for stakeholders
  • Maintain a network with the investment community to aid in knowledge of opportunities and to serve as references
  • Travel domestically and internationally for meetings in relation to existing and prospective investments
  • Assist in the establishment, assessment, and modification of broad DUMAC's portfolio strategic asset allocations, as well as tactical adjustments
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization, including coaching and mentoring junior members of the Private Investment team
  • Act as a team player, providing critical feedback to team members on fund and direct investments and otherwise, as well as being receptive to such feedback
  • Assist in maintaining Duke's reputation for professional excellence, integrity, credibility with the investment community
  • Perform various other related duties on an ad-hoc basis



Required Qualifications At This Level

This role requires experience in research and financial analysis, generally acquired through at least six years of related experience. Significant experience is preferred in a senior role leading the sourcing and managing of investments in funds within an institutional context, such as at a university endowment, foundation, or similar organization. Completion of a bachelor's degree is required; an MBA and/or CFA are preferred.

Work requires experience in research and financial analysis, generally OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE acquired through twoyears of related experience.
